I agree that the Jihad would have lasted as long as it lasted. But I also kinda think that Paul was not waiting for some proper time to set things into motion necessarily.
I think he was just waiting for it to happen, period. The same events could have happened at any point in the jihad, delaying them did not change them. Chani still would have died, the twins born, Alia in power (and abomination), etc. The only differences would be that the transfer of power from Alia to the twins would have happened sooner after the jihad. But I have to admit I forget some key points that would sway my opinion, so I have some questions for those of you with the books handy:

1. Did Paul become blind before or after Chani announced she was pregnant? (In other words, did he set the events into motion or did they just happen?)

2. Is there any indication in the books that Paul knew about the contraceptive beforehand? (I personally think that Chani would have KILLED him and Irulan if she had found out that he knew. That's a thin rope to walk, even if you are the Messiah) ;)
