I read the original 6 first, because they were the only ones out. Then along came the Prelude to Dune Trilogy (House series) and now the Legends of Dune Trilogy.

I would suggest NOT reading the Legends of Dune Trilogy yet since only book 1 of 3 is out, book 2 is due in September. (Dune Novels informed me the Cover Art will be released in two weeks and I can put it up here with the rest!)

Then Book three in Sept 04. So I'd wait on reading that trilogy that series. Plus it really doesn't give you anything but historical view at this point. You don't have to read those to understand the other two series.

so your only question really is which first... Prelude to Dune or Original Dune.

so let's assume you read the Prelude trilogy first...
Pros...
You will get an introduction to the various families, understand the hatreds, and learn about Arrakis, and fremen.

Cons...
You learn about axoltl tanks too soon, it's one of the great mysteries of Frank's books, until book 5.

Honestly I think you should read them in the order of Frank's intent. So this is my recommendation.

Original Dune 1-6 by Frank followed by
Prelude to Dune 1-3 by Brian and Kevin
Legends of Dune 1-3 by Brian and Kevin

Once you get book 3 of Legends of Dune read (sept 04), I'd suggest re-reading Franks original series again in anticipation of DUNE 7 (2005)
