I'm watching the original mini-series again, which is why this question was brought up.
I am now at the point where Chani is explaining where the spice comes from.
Anyway, Jessica told Paul that the Fremen's reverend mother is a Bene Gesserit missionary.
I guess then the BG sent Romallo and others out to spread the word, and these reverend mothers gain religious status among the Fremen? (I guess I would be surprised if that were the case, because it seems to me that the Fremen do not like outsiders much).
