Selim was first introduced in Butlerian Jihad

Selim was kicked out of his seitch by his naib for stealing, (which he didn't do, his best friend did).

When he was cast out into the desert he met up with a worm and instead of being eaten he was able to climb onto the worm and ride it.

He rode a couple of worms in the book, and because he had learned to ride them without killing them, had mastered the art, he took the name Selim Wormrider for himself.

Remember in our ancient history, most Surnames had meaning, and usually that meaning had something to do with the job task they performed. Same with Selim.
