i think the encyclopedia is brilliant if you don't read it as a work made in 1984 (despite the copyrights in the corner of the illustrations) but as a book written after the find at dar es ballat (sp?) (as it says it is in the timeline at the beginning of the book). i took the dune encylopedia to be from the viewpoint of those fictional researchers and historians thousands of years after leto II trying to write a coherent history of the main movers and shakers surrounding leto II's rule and everything that lead up to it. it even has references for other books written by authors in the dune universe.

that's why it's not going to be 100% accurate to the history that we, the outsiders, read about that occured 15,000 years before the dune encylopedia was written.

i know what you mean about the detail, i mean, for christ sakes it has the chemical structure for melange!
