How about a review?

I took my buddy Tom, in town from Virginia for work, to the first night @ Martyr's last month. Tom has never seen the GD, never known any of their tunes, except that he has heard me and my bands attempt some of them a few times.

He (and I of course) had a blast. Just as the show was about to begin, i'm wondering aloud what they will play. I'm trying to explain that "just-the-song-you-didn't-know-you-needed-to-hear" thing, and Tom reminds me that he likes country, and 30sec later the band kicks off with Ripple in a nice two-steppy beat. Perfect!

LTGTR and BE Women keep the country groove going nicely. As usual, DSO Sound Guy has a crystal clear sonic image, so Tom can enjoy lots of lyrics even though he's never known them.

Masterpiece curiously happens just exactly one week (to the hour) after Tom had tuned into a webcasted show by a band that includes me and heard us attempt Masterpiece. At the end, I say, "that's what we were trying to do right there!!"

Same thing happens with Cassidy.

So, Tom's having fun. For me, the rare gem TWLWMYD !!!!! My first one ever, in fact. Yummy yummy yummy - I was enjoying that so much I thought my face would crack from smiling.

Second set was chock full of Pat Mallinger - especially the deliciously soulful "Forever Young". That sax solo was marvelous.

Turns out that Tom loves saxophone, so he really extra-dug the second set. (btw boots - Pat was playing the part of Pat, not Branford or anyone. Highly recommend his show here at Green Mill in Chicago ;^)

Uncanny. Just plain uncanny how DSO manages to channel that "just-what-you-didn't-know-you-wanted-to-hear" vibe. The second night at Martyr's was a lot more "deep dead" that might not have worked as well for a first-timer. (But my wife Erica loved it!) But that first night was perfect for my buddy Tom.

My hometown band did me proud! Again!!!
