Herdy, what a great post. It made me feel like I was there. I wish that I was, but I am in sunny Florida taking my kids to see there Grandmas before school starts on Monday. Priorities like that even take precedence over the music, but hopefully not next year!!

This is the second Ledges/Rett syndrome benefit that I have missed and believe me I am sad...but, so happy that my favorite band has adopted the Rett syndrome cause. Why do you ask? Because my lovely 8 year old daughter Elaina also has Rett syndrome!!

Rett syndrome is a devastating genetic/neurological disorder that mostly affects girls, robbing them of virtually any independant abilities and leaving them in the care of their loved ones for life. The simplest things imaginable are beyond the grasp of most girls and women with Rett syndrome. It strikes me as unbelievable that the band that I love so much also has a special place in their hearts for the cause that is so near and dear to me. Thank you Evan for bringing the band into our Rett family!

When it comes to helping out children in trouble, I can't say no. Since receiving the diagnosis for Elaina 7 years ago I went on a mission to help kids in need wherever and whenever my skills or cash has allowed. It has opened my eyes in a big way. I've traveled to Vietnam 3 times, in 2000, 2002 and 2003 doing reconstructive foot and ankle surgeries on kids with polio-all for free. Talk about a life changing perspective! I am a co-founder of the Rett Syndrome Research Charity (RSRCh), a non profit 501 c 3. Check out the website, rsrch.org. Last year we netted $100,000 at our inaguaral fundraiser and our next one is scheduled for 11/4/05 and we are hoping for 200K!!! I also felt completely compelled to contribute in the way that I could to Scott's daughter Georgiana's fund. I am proud to say that I covered the cost for about $800 worth of Custom Birkenstocks and orthotics (that I paid the lab for) and donated all the money that the band and family spent on them to her fund (and about $500 more that went to the live and silent auctions at Martyrs!!)

Giving is so important, especially for a cause that benefits children. I want to thank everyone who supported the Rett syndrome raffle at the Ledges. Your donations do make a difference! And Dave, If you are reading this I will kick in another $1000 like last year to the total. Just email me and remind me where to send the check!

Love,

Dr. Barry

PS-those custom Birks and Orthotics are on the way. I will contact everyone as soon as they are in.
