Subject: On Reviews, Positive & Negative - From A Hippie

I find it disturbing that fans of this band cannot seem to accept that some people don't enjoy what we do... while enthusiasm is appreciated by us all (in the band), there are going to be times where the music just doesn't reach out through us in particular to certain individuals, and no matter what that person thinks we should try to be more tollerant and perhaps even turn an ear towards the nay-sayers in an effort to further sharpen our act... the reviews page is not a place where only good things can be said, it's a place for people to exchange ideas and feelings...

I didn't get the chance to read everything this guy wrote because we were out on the road when the post was put up, but I gotta say I'm almost MORE offended that someone went and cut'n'pasted their blather over and over and over just to try and blot this one person's opinions out... that, my friends, is CENCORSHIP... and it pains me greatly to think that we as hippies are so close-minded and intollerant that we can't allow such views to coexsist with our own. That's not how the hippie elders taught ME to be when I joined the family back in 1981, a punker with a spiked wrist band who just wanted to fight with everyone around me (and... uh... often LOSE said engagement... heh heh).

Why do we fear someone who hates what we're about so much? And do we think that such opinions (expressed where said opinions are supposed to belong - a REVIEW PAGE) are going to bring us down, or ruin our buzz, just because they exsist? Are we (as Dead or DSO fans) really so insecure?

I don't think so.

I didn't get to read all of the nasty comments this guy made but I heard about a few of them... and so what? Plenty of people think I'm an asshole, and a lot of other people view me as a Sonic Saint. Which is it? Well, if you ask Lisa our vocalist on any given day, you might get either answer and neither of them would be 100% correct... it's a perception, and she's welcome to form whichever she feels (sorry Lisa, I'm not picking on you but I needed an example) at the time...

... I WILL say that I'm kind of glad we're not floating every listener's boat... I'm glad to be pissing a few people off playing music that "isn't mine", because the Grateful Dead did that very same thing throughout their entire career ("I Fought The Law"?) and they still carry out that mission as splinter cells to this very day (or did I just imagine the name "Scratch-Dog" around the scene when Bobby added turntables to his act?)

As a member of this gathering, I am heartened by the fact that there are people out there who love what we do... but I'm also a bit put off by the rabid nature and paving over perceived cracks by a few individuals who can't take some criticism at the object of their affection... the self-appointed cencors of the review page are wearing blinders just as bad as the person they are so desperately trying to muffle...

You don't change anything by simply "making it go away". Hard attitudes and strong attacks are not fun to endure, but they can be met with intelligence rather than brute strength or totalitarian-state style cencorship.

Just my two-cents,

~Cameron~

Never posted that shit. What a fucking loser. Never said that. You guys have balls pulling shit like this and calling yourself a hippie or a Dead Head or talking about love and peace. You're fucking liars. Your act is a lie that's right ACT and your words are lies. Fuck you all. I've tried to stay level headed after me original post. Yeah Rob, if you really have to do something like this to try and convince your fan base you are the real deal you are sadder than I thought.

Love what you all do. Has really reinvigorated my love for the music and it is fun to enjoy the scene on a much smaller scale than late 80's and 90's. Will miss the shows at Stella Blue here in Albuquerque now that they've closed down. Went up to the Mishawaka shows and had a blast though. Keep it coming. We need it.

You are fucking unbelievable. Who is this?? Why are you trying to contradict my posts by masquerading like that. You are just trying to confuse the issues and everyone in here. The love I have would not make me say what you are trying to make me soudn like. I never call anyone a hater. And REALLY fucked up throwing in the part about my friends and family and especially my business. Leave that out of this if you are going to play games like this. All I am trying to do is show a different view of things from a person who knows. The music DSO copies note for note is worth saving from them and that is why I am here not to save any broken china dolls. If you think this REAL BOOTSY is not the real Bootsy (me) here is my email and phone number :

is this a message board for reviewing DSO or a board for middle-aged men to attack each other? either way, not a good way to encourage ANYTHING!

your messages reveal how you live... drug users (aka harvesting- maybe not a good idea to put on a public message board), cocky (makes people of ALL types dis-like you), disrespectful and mostly inappropiate. this board is designed for Reviewing Shows. Review the shows you attend and move on. Your extreme personalities only warrant concern.

THIS WAS NOT MY POST. You people are truly fucking amazing. You sit here and you talk about love and peace and open mindedness and live and let be and you pull shit like this and call me a drunk and a junkie and on and on and on. I am a business owner (2 of them) I have a very loving family and very, very close friends. All me or we are trying to do is stop this madness. Even if we get some of you to think about the fact that this might be a bit of a sham or at the very least being taken way to far or even more importantly get you to explore a bit more into the original music or prod these guys to create instead of recreate, then I/we feel we have accomplished something and helped someone. You are the fucking haters. You hate me because I don't agree with what these guys are doing.

Wow. If I had the tools to play some sweet tunes that Robert hunter wrote, in a style that jerry played, I would feel blessed, and do everything I could to make that sound my own...but they (DSO)are mere forgers....without a clue as to where to go to take the music further...thats why phil and bob are true Artists...they take the framework and sometimes radically alter what we expect to hear and the music evolves, and sometimes falls flat on its face.
DSO can't afford to fall flat, because the 800 people won't comeback...they have pigeon holed themselves

" Jerry was not a cool guy he just lived off us and he couldnt even hang. he was lost just like you and DSO are."

Wow, I'm going to need a new roller bar on my mouse to handle the exhasting verbage that has been going on here for the last few weeks. To be brief, I'm 37 yrs. old, married and have a son 5 yrs. old that's stating kindergaten next week. I've seen DSO 3 times (Dead 50 +)and would like to say for what it's worth; just going to either the Elec Factory or more recently in Dewey Beach; I can let loose from my everyday world and enjoy music. Plain & Simple. If being "establishment" Bootsy, means going to work every day, providing food, shelter & education for my family and being a good Christian, then I'm proud to say "I AM", regardless of what others think. Isn't that the message (parden the pun) that we should be evoking to the our children.

Thanks everyone

As I write this response to Rob's reply I'm enjoying a bowl of Rocky Road ice cream, it sooths me like the violin soothed the monster. Just kidding, but it is really really good. I suggest you get some before reading this. Chocolate, Marshmellows and Almonds Oh My!

Rob, I want to thank you once again for chiming in and I respect you for doing so. It takes guts and shows you are a decent guy. However, I don't agree with everything you've had to say and I'd like a chance to address your remarks if I may.

First I'd like you and everyone else to know that I have had and still have dialogue via email with some people that are big fans of yours and although we see things differently we have managed to find a common ground where we can passionately disagree, yet still see where each other are coming from and even helped each other see things in a different light. Why is that so hard for everyone else? I won't name their names as I would not want them to be alienated or shunned for associating themselves with such an evil, hateful sociopath such as myself. But I think if you asked them about me, they'd have some nice things to say. With that said...

"What
>bootsy doesn't get is that DSO does NOT COPY any show
>in any way. The concept of playing "shows" for us is
>mearly a set list. It would be against everything the
>music is meant to be if it were "copied" as boosty
>suggests. The beauty of the music is that it's based
>around improvisation. The heart and soul of the music
>is the freedom to play it as you feel at that moment.
>If it's forced or planned it fails. We play the music
>from our hearts not from our heads."

I myself did not hear the improv. It sounded to me like you guys were playing a show that you picked out and there are many others that feel the same way. If you say it ain't so I'll believe you. But why then do you even bother telling people what show it was afterwards? Forgive me for being so blunt, but as far as I'm concerned it is planned and does fail. That being said I do believe that you guys play from the heart and are talented musicians and I have said thir previously.

"We don't try to look, sound, act like the Dead it's just how it is.>Every show is different from the next."

Sorry Rob, but check out your own web site, particularly under the photos and bios of the band. They put the person you are supposed to be in parentheses after your own names with a picture of you guys. But it appears you guys changed that since I first posted. Anyway, John's photo is him with a famous Garcia facial expression. Am I wrong? Maybe you're right, maybe it is just how it is, but then why bother naming the band member you are supposed to be portraying on your own website with a bio about how you studied Bobby for years? Or a photo of you looking like that person?

"Another thing
>about the Dead that many forget is that half of their
>material were cover songs from other artists. Some of
>our favorites Morning Dew, Going Down The Road, I Know
>You Rider etc were all covers."

I'm very aware of this and actually mentioned it in several of my posts followed by saying that I'd like to hear you guys play those covers your own way, because you guys can play. If you look you will see these comments over and over. Also, I'd like to point out that the boys played covers the way they played, not copying the tune, they made a cover theirs in a way by playing it the way they played. I think you guys should do the same. They covered them for a reason. They're great songs. Also, I'm probably wrong, but I thought Dew was actually a poem that Garcia put music to, but now that I think of it, yes the woman that wrote it also sang it I think.

"Each
>night we get to explore the music and take it
>different places. The jazz community has been covering
>each others songs for decades. It's a priviladge to be
>able to play this music."

You're right and again, the Jazz community, of which I'm very, very familiar does play covers of even their contemporaries, but each musician or ensemble does it with their own interpretation as the boys did. That's what makes it special. Would love to hear you guys do the same. I love hitting a small jazz club in Manahattan and seeing a bunch of guys that are not the big dogs shredding a Stella By Starlight or a Cantaloupe Island or a Mingus tune and hearing them do it the way THEY do it. A friend said it best right here in one of these reviews, I'm paraphrasing. You guys have the talent and you play so well, you're playing fantastic music that has so many improvisational possibilities, why not open the door and step out into them.

"The thing that Bootsy doesn't
>get is that being a Dead Head is a way of life, a way
>of thinking. The music was just one part of it the
>other part was and is the people. The beauty is when
>it all comes together. Who cares if you know the title
>if it moves you emotionally THATS whats important!
>Those open enough get it and will continue to come
>back the others will miss it but that's also a part of
>life."

Dude you have no more right to tell these people or me what a Dead Head is than I do. I was man enough to admit it. Now can you? I know exactly what it is to be a Dead Head, because I live my lide each and every day as one. Without having to posture myself as one or scream it fromt he roof tops. Besides you could ask 1,000 different Dead Heads what a Dead Head is and you'd probably get 975 different answers and I would expect you to know that. I even said in a few posts that I'm sure you guys are true Dead Heads. You don't know me or who I am. For all you know we hung out at a show or two and had some laughs together or bumped into each other in the parking lot from time to time.

"The music was just one part of it the
>other part was and is the people. The beauty is when
>it all comes together. Who cares if you know the title
>if it moves you emotionally THATS whats important!"

One of your fans I've been emailing with said it best about this very topic...Me: "I tried to use a little tough love and I guess it back fired. God how many times did I
have the older tour heads go off on me about shit when I was on tour?"

DSO Fan: "This is probably related to the all-too-common occurance of email not really capturing the exact emotional inflection of its writer and the reader over-reading it."

I want EVERYONE to be a Dead Head, imagine what a world it would truly, truly be. All I want is for them to get into it for the right reasons and learn about how and why it happened and continues. Not just to rush to see a coverband portraying the real thing and pretend that you are there. Most of the people at the show I saw were under 30 years old and it was evident that they were there for the wrong reasons. I used the Mexicali thing as an example. Maybe it was wrong. Probably was. I would not have wanted someone to do that to me at a show back in the day. But maybe that kid will listen to the music now and learn about it instead of worrying more about his clothes and whether or not he's pulling the correct dance moves. Sorry, there goes that tough love thing again. I dived headfirst into the Grateful Dead community at 17 and met a lot of cool people that brought me along. I have brought many people along and still do. I just want them to love it for the right reasons. And I personally don't think what you are doing is right and I'm not the only Dead Head that thinks so bro. Sorry if you thought differently.

"Those open enough get it and will continue to come
>back the others will miss it but that's also a part of
>life."

Kind of an arrogant statement. Don't you think? Not that many of mine have not been. If they don't get what the DSO is doing then they don't get it? Or don't get what the Dead was doing? We're kind of singing the same tune on different street corners. Guess we're both throwing stones. No Grateful Dead pun intended.

"When the old Grateful Dead family come out to
>see us (Kidd, Betty, Mountain Girl, Donna Jean, Harry
>Popick the list goes on) that's our biggest jury. They
>continue to come out because the feeling is the same
>and they would know certainly more so then Bootsy."

True I guess they would not more about that than me. However I've already stated several times why they do and I'm not going to drag the Family through the mud. I've met a lot of them over the years and most were very decent people. I've said what I have to say about this.

"Imagine if nobody ever played other artists music
>after the original stopped? What a sad thing that
>would be! Peace"

Never said that nobody should. Just think each person should interpret it in their own way. You can think what you want of me Rob, but I am a very creative person and I'm seriously anti-establishment and always have been. I live in the man's world as little as possible and make my own way. I've found a way to use my creativity and many of the lessons I learned from being a Dead Head in my life every day. Not all of my ideas are original, but if I don't put my own spin on them or allow my creativity to flow into them, I'm not creating, I'm just recreating. Peace man. Seriously. Bootsy has TONS O LOVE for all of you and all that know me, know that.

Sorry for the lateness. After everyone else¡¦s this might be anticlimactic, but read on if you need ANOTHER GratefulFest review. Haven¡¦t had the time to complete it, until now. So, read on.

If you were there, you know what I mean. If you were not, man did you miss out!!!! I'm sorry, but these were the ONES folks. Easily the best run I've ever seen. I've been describing these as incredibly emotional shows, evoking rapture and despair intermittingly. [This sounds stupid even as I type but it¡¦s true]: Other than the birth of my daughters, these were the most powerful moments I¡¦ve ever experienced, specifically the Saturday 8/20/05 show.

Shad¡¦s 100% Honest Warts-And-All Reviews, of stuff that I remember, ¡¥cause there¡¦s a LOT of it!

Friday 8/19/05:

Cornmeal. Go see this appetizing band. Don¡¦t know the name of the lady on fiddle, but wow. Then another good Gans set, especially Down To Eugene. High quality throughout the DSO first set, but let¡¦s face it, that¡¦s the norm when catching a Dark Star show. It¡¦s sad, but we all kind of expect that now, you know? Ok, that¡¦s not a sad thing at all. Well anyhow, Eyes is KILLER right from the start as they blast into the bulk of the song without any slow buildup, and then WHAM as they do the Dirt jams. I can¡¦t put my finger on it, and it pains me to write it, but something seemed a little ¡§off¡¨ during some of the ebbs and flows of some of those jams. Maybe I have to do a little more research and reevaluation. 9.5 out of 10 stars at least nevertheless. The weirdest thing was the absence of China Doll after the Eyes, as it was a rare stand-alone version. Another clue to the date, Scarlet out of Playin, which returns back to Playin completing the sandwich. Duh. It was good. REAL good. Oh! Don¡¦t Ease, a ¡§throwaway¡¨ tune I often feel as do many others (Don¡¦t Sleeze on J-cards ring a bell?) was REALLY hot too! Who knew?!! ƒº

2nd set included a weird tech-diff during El Paso, and a mysterious He¡¦s Gone > Truckin > Spanish Jam > Other One > GDTRFB where you never really knew what song was going to materialize next due to intentional or unintentional clues and teases. Other One included a good roll from Kevin. SSDD had both Lisa and Donna wailing (right?! it¡¦s been a few days now). Taper Geek Alert: The personal highlight for my bro and I was watching the numbers say ¡§2 minutes¡¨ of tape remaining, ¡§1 minute¡¨, and finally reading ¡§0 minutes¡¨ during the SSDD for an eternity capped of by the two of us cheering hysterically when the finale finally crashed and the tape promptly stopped seconds thereafter. Made the switch and enjoyed a spry US Blues. (8/6/74 btw)

Saturday 8/20/05:

Crazy hurricane-like storm blows vendors canopies and small children around the park just a few hours before showtime. Clear skies for Shimmy Shack¡¦s set. Those guys can really play together! Stir Fried had the pleasure of playing quite well in the horizontal hose-down. Gotta love the Dirty Dozen. They not only play up to their name and beyond with some good raunch, the trumpet player dons a black and gold 36 jersey while I in my Steeler Your Face T. Take that Herd/Bix/et al.!

On paper nothing looks all that spectacular. 5/11/78. Short 2nd set in terms of songs. Typical ¡¦78 stuff. However, almost everything is played with an energy, not an easily perceivable FAST-type energy, but an emotional one. Just about every song has a certain, quality, or character, to it that really hit me. I don¡¦t know how it will reproduce on tape or if the disc will get much play in the car, but the experience of this live show was nothing I can properly explain. It¡¦s a ¡§writing about music is like dancing about architecture¡¨-type thing.

Good Cold Rain opener, and fitting, for sure. What, a 20 or so beat BIODTL? Somebody was off by one I think.. :) Slow FOTD not usually my thing, but tonight¡K. it was well received. L.L.Rain made me think, ¡§another slow one? bah!¡¨. But this was an INCREDIBLE L.L.Rain (get the tape). I wish I could remember which lovely lady was responsible for this. Rest of the set was average, but in DSO-land that¡¦s more than merely adequate. Mexicali > Mama DID stand out. And then the Lazy > Supplication. Supplication!!!!! Break.

Just about all you could want from a Scarlet > Fire (more Scarlet than Fire this time), but that only warmed things up: Dancin, long and involved. Never met one of those I didn¡¦t thoroughly enjoy. Drums is good and funky when a slough of people come out for a family drums. Can¡¦t remember most now, but Looky and Pres were out there having a good time. Perfect ¡¦78-style NFA, with that long buildup, and not so flashy and hard-hitting. Great team effort (lead by John¡¦s vocals) on Stella Blue, a song now never the same for me since Scott¡¦s memorial. My first Around in over 4 years didn¡¦t disappoint, especially the up tempo ending (actually Cold Rain, BIODTL, and Lazy > Supp were all absent from my shows the last 4 years until THIS show ¡V thanks guys!!!!). More Chuck Berry to come¡K. Goofy Werewolves. SMOKING J.B.Goode.

Correct me if I¡¦m wrong, but this is when Evan used the perfect word to remember those who are gone: angels. That speech, in that setting. Powerful.

Had a BLAST after the show. Thanks to George, Arthur, Ashley, Ryan, Re, and Gerry for pranksterish fun ¡¥round the campfire, and to new neighbor and friend Shaggy, and to Dark Star Coffee Girl Jen for keeping me cool with milkshake after milkshake. Try the chai. Sorry to the people we may have kept up until (almost) dawn.

Sunday 8/21/05:

Sunday morning I woke up a bit after 11:00 and ran down to the stage to catch the Morning Gans jam. Great stuff with Cheryl Ann, but the highlight was John playing mandolin and singing on some tunes, especially Down To Eugene and Rueben & Cherise. The request for Valerie was denied but this guy wasn¡¦t complaining. The Tricksters were awesome. They closed their set with my first ever live New Potato. REAL long and involved. Keller¡¦s set would have benefited from nightfall and some nifty lighting. Last year I REALLY got off on the first half of his set, and enjoyed the rest. This year was all like last year¡¦s second half, very enjoyable but not thoroughly spectacular.

Having a hard time remembering all the original raffle setlist songs. WRS > Let It Grow was about 18 thrilling minutes, with Eaton on his acoustic. Donna came out and did an eloquent Cassidy. Oh, loved Barraco singing Mr. Charlie. Speaking of Charlie, Cosmic Charlie (isn¡¦t one of those spelled with an ¡¥ley¡¦?) came out of the St. Stephen second set opener¡K oh that slide guitar¡K which was, again, a song I haven¡¦t heard in 4 years, when I did a LOT of shows. Drums/Space was rather out there, especially with the lights bouncing off of the stage, trees, and ourselves. SOTM. Perfect. For many I believe the moon wasn¡¦t quite visible during the song as it was rising up from behind some trees, but it was so BRIGHT that it didn¡¦t matter. The Alabama encore (for Tiff) rocked hard, and made me think how much more this one would be loved if the lyrics were more Minglewood, Touch, or Cassidy. Bama went into Sing Me Back Home, a personal favorite, but this one was with both ladies. Each one took a turn leading the ¡§COME ALIVE¡¨ buildup. This was in my noggin the whole time driving home.

This weekend, this just about as perfect as can be weekend, was capped off for us by getting lost ¡V missed a turn, wrong turn, who knows, but it was something stupid I¡¦m sure ¡V but getting lost is FUN if you do it with walkie-talkies and two cars worth of people and you¡¦re in middle of NOWHERE and you smell like a selection of meats cooked over a campfire. The folks at the rest area, which was rather busy for the hour which we arrived, raised a few ¡¥brows to be sure.

People, you¡¦re insane if next year you don¡¦t make it. Start requesting personal days, renting RVs, and finding babysitters pronto. It¡¦s the show of the year, every year. The NYE run, which hopefully I¡¦ll make after a 4 year absence, ain¡¦t got nothing on this.

Not played but appropriate...
¡§Ain¡¦t no place I¡¦d rather be
Baby won¡¦t you carry me

DRAMA, DRAMA, DRAMA! WHEW!! The joy of a message board!
Hi Cammy - great post. I may steal some of it's sentiments for the GOTV board....
Just stopped in to say hello and that I love you all. It was so hard for me to leave Saturday night, but I was all biz and had to get some rest. So now I'm just jonsin to see you all when I can relax and enjoy the show! So everyone I've spoken to has said amazing things about the tribute and what a great job you all did. I heard Cotter was pulled on stage at the end - it brought tears to my eyes just to hear that so wish I had been there. Oh well there's always the video...
Hope you enjoyed yourselves. Enjoy your time off.
Much LOVE,
Jen

I know that this is the DSO site for reviews, but after seeing all that had been posted by any and everyone the past couple'o weeks, I thought it might be alright if I just asked this one thing and then we can go back to reviewing DSO shows... I'm cleaning up my 1980 westy a little, and I removed the tailgate panel and the sliding door panel due to deterioration and I'm looking to replace them, Any suggestions>? Or am I stuck with cutting out the pieces to fit the doors on my own... Please if you have any solutions, I'd be grateful. Peace and Love --Sage

Amazing show!!! I was @ Irving Plaza the 2nd night. I LOVE 77 shows... and they delivered. 4/30/77. I almost cried during Stella Blue... A Yummy, yummy setlist to say the least. I had the pleasure of being at the very front, right in front of Kevin. I freaked myself silly... had myself a trippy old time!!! My girlfriend was also there with me.... she shares the same opinion. The band was so on that night. Hoo wee!! This show will be on my mind for the rest of my life. Thank you all so much. You're an inspiration.

I'm not very good at writing a review but shit we need something, this bootsie stuff is seriously interupting the flow of my workday entertainment.

How about that Springfield show, huh? It got kind of lost in the shuffle with the Ledges and all, but it was a great little show. I always enjoy the original setlists, in fact I hope for those most of the time.

I like the "just-the-song-you-didn't-know-you-needed-to-hear" thing from Dave...so I gonna steal it(sorry Dave). H.C. Sunshine always fits into that catagory for me, and BAM right there it is to open the show. The choppy jam kind of reminds me of taking a hike at the Glen not too far from the venue itself. Every hippie within 100 miles has lost their mind in those woods at one point or another. I then mosey down in front of the stage for Stranger and Dire Wolf and run into a friend. Mike from Chicago, I'm sure there can only be one Mike from Chicago, right? Met him at the Ledges 5 years ago and been running into him ever since, it's gonna be a damn fine weekend we agree. Desolation Row is next and I always picture pieces of fence flying around when I hear that song, if you were at Deer Creek ten years ago you know why.

Spent the rest of the set running around and shootin' the shit but do remember a smokin' Stagger Lee and Next Time You See Me with Rob Barraco singing...way SWEET!!! Any chance of him staying permanatly? Probably not but man its fun to imagine. The guy has got AMAZING energy, it's easy to see why the Dead like him so much.

The second set, oh what a set it was indeed! Box of Rain and the entire WRS->Let It Grow to follow. "Thank you sir may I have another?" YES...you may. Touch> St Stphen> Drums> NFA> Space> NFA> St Stephen> Morning Dew> Lovelight. The Dew kicked much, much ass! Eat your heart out Bootsie, I know, I know, don't add fuel to the fire but, damn it I just couldn't help it. A set like that, with Lisa I might add, is most definatly what keeps this fan coming back for more! Throw in a Brokedown and On The Road Again and you got yourself one hellava fun night. Thank you Springfield, see you next year, oh wait...I live here.

Hey, you know what? One more killer venue here in Ohio and we might be able to give those Colorado boys a run for their money! What do you say DSO? If it weren't for the god forsaken humidity.

Peace(you too Bootsie),
JayB

OKAY, SO LAST NIGHT'S SHOW WAS A SCORCHER...BUT WEREN'T THEY ALL IN '72?? OPENING WITH A VERY SMOOTH & BOUNCY BERTHA, THE BAND HEADED OUTTA THE GATES WITH GUSTO AND CONTINUED THROUGHOUT THE SET WITH BIG RIVER, STELLA BLUE AND BIG RxR BLUES AS STANDOUTS...BUT THEY SAVED THE BEST FOR LAST (OF SET I, ANYWAY) WHEN, DURING THE PLAYIN' JAM, JOHN LET OUT THE TIGER...THE PULSATING WAVES OF ENERGY WERE BEING EXCHANGED WILDLY BETWEEN BAND AND AUDIENCE AS THE GROWLING GREW MORE AND MORE FEROCIOUS...JOHN WAS DEFINITELY IN ANOTHER DIMENTIA, I MEAN DIMENSION, AT THIS POINT;CHANELLING THE SPIRITS OF BOTH THE TIGER AND SENOR GARCIA...AS GOOD AS THE PITB WAS THE NIGHT B4 IN BUFFALO IT COULDN'T HOLD A CANDLE TO THIS VERSION...WOW!!
TRADING IN THE LIVELINESS OF THE SHOW OPENER, THE SECOND SET OPENED WITH MORN DEW!!! THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT BUILDING A SET FROM A PLACE LIKE THIS ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU SEE WHERE THE SET ENDS UP GOING...AFTER A ROUSING DEW WE WERE TREATED TO A WONDERFUL GSET WITH THE OBLIGATORY '72-ERA ST STEPHEN-LIKE JAM IN THE MIDDLE...NICELY DONE!!!THE NEXT FEW SONGS FOLLOWED SUIT AND THEN DON'T EASE SERVED AS THE PERFECT BONE SHAKER TO PRECEDE AN ABSOLUTELY OUT-FREAKIN'-RAGEOUS DARK STAR...THE BAND FOUND NUMEROUS NOOKS AND CRANNIES TO LOOK INSIDE...SOME WERE JUST THAT;LOOKED IN BUT OTHERS WERE EXPLORED TO THE HILT...JOHN, ROB'S E & B, AND DINO(?) ALL HAD A SAY @ SOME POINT AS TO WHICH DIRECTION THE JAM WOULD TAKE>>>THERE WAS ATONAL JAMMING OF THE HIGHEST, MOST TASTEFUL IMPROVISATIONAL QUALITY, THERE WERE SPURTS OF JAMMING WHERE THE STYLE WOULD CHANGE AFTER ABOUT 2 MINUTES ON AN IDEA THEN WHAMMO!!! SOMEONE ELSE WOULD GET AN IDEA, TAKE THE HELM AND LEAD US ALL IN A NEW DIRECTION; FUNK, BACK-BEAT, STRAIGHT-UP ROCK, ETC...WELL, THE STAR MELTED (IF A BIT ABRUPTLY) INTO A SWEET MUCH NEEDED BREATHER IN THE FORM OF BROKEDOWN PALACE WHICH FELT LIKE A COOL BREEZE AFTER HAVING A LONG & WINDING TREK THROUGH THE DESSERT....THE 'SHOW' ENDED AS IT BEGAN; LIVELY AND BOUNCY WITH A NFA>GDTRFB>NFA THAT LEFT THE CROWD CHANTING THE NFA CHANT AS THE BAND LEFT THE STAGE AND NOT LETTING UP AN IOTA UNTIL THEY CAME BACK FOR THE SAT NIGHT ENCORE....THANK YOU FOR A RREEAALL GGOOOOOD TIME AND FOR GIVING ME THE OPPURTUNITY TO EXPERIENCE A SMIDGIN OF SOMETHING THAT HAPPENED BEFORE I WAS EVEN BORN...PS: MY VERY PREGNANT WIFE AND I HUNG OUT AT THE STAGE RIGHT SIDE OF THE STAGE MOST OF THE NIGHT AND SH SAID THAT LITTLE HUNTER HASN'T STOPPED DANCING IN HER BELLY SINCE THURSDAY NIGHT!!!!!!!!THANX AGAIN & SEE YA SOON!!!!!!!!

Hey now people! What a fantastic weekend from start to finish, weather wise, music, friends, and laughter.. From the time Cornmeal came on to start the weekend off till the last note from the one man band singing until 5am Sunday morning, there was magic in the air.

So I pulled into the park a little early (2 days to be exact) and decided to get a great camping site and settle in before the chaos started. Ran into some of my "family" right off the bat and had a great dinner with them.. you know how to cook some chicken ya monkey... anyway... The family members just came rolling in one after another, and before ya knew it, I couldn't turn around anywhere in the park without seeing someone I knew..

...anyway, onto the music...

Friday opened up with Cornmeal, a GREAT blue/newgrass band from Chicago, followed by David Gans and then DSO... I believe they played Rob Eaton's first Grateful Dead show, which was 8/6/74.. First set was great and the second set was long and beautiful! Wavy Gravy commenting and sharing stories inbetween sets, and making everyone laugh with his animated movements and tone of voice. Donna Jean sitting in and singing, and seeing Tiff Garcia (yes, the man who cut off Jerry's finger back in the day) having a great time and enjoying the show. One couldn't ask for a better evening, and expect it to only get better as the days went on..

Saturday, was my personal favorite day for the Gratefulfest.. besides the hour downpour from the heavens, the weather, and music was FANTASTIC!! Started off the day with a couple swims in the lake, and then sat infront of the stage for the shows... DSO once again, rocked the night away with a steller preformance of 5/11/78, with a Peggy-O that made your eyes tear up.. Wavy Gravy at it again, telling stories, Donna Jean tearing it up with Lisa, and my favorite part of the night was the Family Drumz... Made my first, and hopefully not my last showing during drumz with a tamborine and woodblock, with Rob, Dino, the gang from Cornmeal, Dave, Debbie, RW, Prescott, Tiff, Zion, and a few I know I'm forgetting, thanks for the memory that will last a lifetime!
Late-night on stage was Zion Godchaux and BOOMBOX! What a GREAT show! If you ever get a chance to see that kid play, DO IT! After the music the party had just begun, and we played all night..

Sunday was the Benifit rally for The Rett Foundation, a great cause that raised over $5,000 for the cause! The crowd got to pick the setlists by buying raffle tickets and requesting the song... Raffle prizes included anything from free DSO tickets, to signed copies of books, to The Dead's final summer tour last summer, to old 1987 Grateful Dead Summer tour all access passes framed for all to see.. Hats off to everyone who provided for a great cause, and Dave Weissman who took alot of time to put this all together and be there everyday to run the raffle! DSO rocked the setlist from requests, and I got mine.. Standing on the Moon sent shivers down my spine..

Anyway, I won't ramble on to much, but I just have to say thank you to everyone who made that weekend special to me. You all are my family, and until the next time we meet, I will get by through the music in my heart... Sorry to those who I did not get to say goodbye to, but I know we'll be together again real soon.. Thanks to Wavy Gravy, Donna Jean, Zion and crew, Tiff Garcia, Evan and Christine, Cornmeal, Keller, and the rest of you talanted people. As for DSO and the extended family... see you all real soon!! Love you all!!

One couldn't ask for a better evening, and expect it to only get better as the days went on..

oops! forget to post it as a new topic in order to take up some space and move out some of the crap posts. Sorry for posting 2 times, but its for a good cause.

Come on reviewers!!! let's fill this up with some good stuff. I figured out we would need about 10 or so good sized reviews to completely get rid of the negativity and get all that crap off this site for good. Someone who hasn't been to this site in a while could easily read one of those yucky posts and have the (almost necessary) urge to reply. We don't want that now, do we? It be opening pandoras box.... all over again. Next time someone posts something like the "B" person did, take our advice. Don't reply. Don't fan the flame. You'll just fill this place up with some thick ass smog again and erase some beautiful show reviews.

More reviews people!!!

I'm very upset that the review I wrote for a show is no more because of all the polution on here. I'll never be able to read that... or any of the replies to it ever again.

A great show at the Bottle and Cork. What an excellent, laid back venue, about 3/4 full with maybe 750 people, one very especially beautiful woman and a couple of friends.

Figured it was early 70's from the tone; the show kind of loped along with a lot of cowboy tunes, then really got cooking near the end of the first set with China>Ryder. The transition had some great, different and extended buildup.

Second set highlights included an excellent Let it Grow, Jam,GDTRFB, and Casey Jones. I'd like to get a look at that little switch they borrowed from the GD that they seem to be able to turn on whenever they want.

What a great band, with great heart, conviction, and huge talent.

Can't wait to see them again.

How about a review?

I took my buddy Tom, in town from Virginia for work, to the first night @ Martyr's last month. Tom has never seen the GD, never known any of their tunes, except that he has heard me and my bands attempt some of them a few times.

He (and I of course) had a blast. Just as the show was about to begin, i'm wondering aloud what they will play. I'm trying to explain that "just-the-song-you-didn't-know-you-needed-to-hear" thing, and Tom reminds me that he likes country, and 30sec later the band kicks off with Ripple in a nice two-steppy beat. Perfect!

LTGTR and BE Women keep the country groove going nicely. As usual, DSO Sound Guy has a crystal clear sonic image, so Tom can enjoy lots of lyrics even though he's never known them.

Masterpiece curiously happens just exactly one week (to the hour) after Tom had tuned into a webcasted show by a band that includes me and heard us attempt Masterpiece. At the end, I say, "that's what we were trying to do right there!!"

Same thing happens with Cassidy.

So, Tom's having fun. For me, the rare gem TWLWMYD !!!!! My first one ever, in fact. Yummy yummy yummy - I was enjoying that so much I thought my face would crack from smiling.

Second set was chock full of Pat Mallinger - especially the deliciously soulful "Forever Young". That sax solo was marvelous.

Turns out that Tom loves saxophone, so he really extra-dug the second set. (btw boots - Pat was playing the part of Pat, not Branford or anyone. Highly recommend his show here at Green Mill in Chicago ;^)

Uncanny. Just plain uncanny how DSO manages to channel that "just-what-you-didn't-know-you-wanted-to-hear" vibe. The second night at Martyr's was a lot more "deep dead" that might not have worked as well for a first-timer. (But my wife Erica loved it!) But that first night was perfect for my buddy Tom.

My hometown band did me proud! Again!!!

it's on old review, but a review nonetheless. this was in Buffalo at the Tralfamadore. june 16th or 17th or something:

i "second that emotion"!!!!

the playin' in the band took my my mind in a million directions at once. A fractal implosion/explosion kind of thing. and that was just Playin'!!! the music never stopped was among the most amazing i've ever experienced. oooh... and the franklin's tower was very fluid and energetic, as was the samson and delilah. aw, forget it. it was ALL amazing. I remember john jammin' out with his eyes closed.... and then.... one eye opened as he looked at Rob Baracco while they exchanged some fluid musical phrases. john looked like a space pirate!! at the controls of that DSO spaceship.

man, i love you guys!!! PLEASE continue to play as often possible. the past shows that i've been priveleged to attend have been spiritual experiences for me. thanks you all so much. see you all again in the near future.
