I can’t thank you enough for your thoughtful words. It truly saddens me that you had to read any of this, but I can tell you that the thoughts you shared go a long way towards healing.

I can’t express enough appreciation for the courage you have shown here, risking personal exposure to such an ugly fray, loosed on your family with such unprovoked malice and indescribable malevolence.

What you wrote reminded me of something Phil said last year at a Dead (The Dead) show. Toward the end of his closing rap ('to anyone within the range of my voice') he seemed to break away from the ‘script’, speaking from the heart to all of us gathered with him in that audience, at that place, at that time. It seemed to be a personal reflection on what had happened that night and how it affected him. I can't quote, but I can paraphrase :

"What happened tonight was more than just our getting up here doing what we do with you all coming to watch. It was more than just a combination of our presence playing music and your presence listening. It was more than just musicians and an audience.

Tonight you are our equal participants in our journey together through music and spirit. This journey not only flows from your spirits, it depends on them.

If we get our part right, the energy we send out sparks an energy you send back, raising the energy we send out, and on and on, forming a special circle flowing between us and lifting us to heights we could never reach without each other.

When things go right like this evening and we all join in this circle our sum total transcends our parts and, as one, we all share in making magic. Thank you for what you give us, because we could not be up here without it.”

It is safe to say that Phil gets it, just as Rob E. does. I doubt Phil would gladly suffer the folly of self-anointed delusionals bent on denying others the transformative power of shared music. I imagine Phil would place inherent value on the symbiotic energy we share through the music we love.
I can't see him joining with those who callously discount the lives and experiences of others as out of conformity with recipes for rightntess the universe.

Magic has no formula. To assign it value, to rank it, to compare it, to deny it in others is to have never felt it. It abides no boundaries in time or space or mind. It is felt, not thought. It excludes none who have not already excluded themselves. Welcome is the embrace of those it finds and from whom it can never be taken.
