In reply to: Lori 's message, "Do you ever wonder if it's you that's insane and everyone else is normal?" on 19:17:01 08/27/06 Sun

I don't know if this is a boomerang effect from the whole 80's "It takes a village" crud or what. In the past few years people in general have come to believe that they alone have the answers to all the world's questions...and if you don't believe and act as they do (or in this case THINK they would) then you are in the wrong.

It's the cult of Gladys Kravitz. Are you old enough to know who that is, rofl??? The nosy neighbor lady on Bewitched...always monitoring everyone else to see if they were behaving according to her standards. Back in the 60's those sort of people were riduculed on tv...now they're everywhere!

I was aware of it because of my own experiences...but I started watching message boards lately and noticing that a lot of folks under the age of 25 firmly believe this is their duty! Recently one gal went on and on about some mom who was in a giftshop at a Disney Hotel. The mom's 2 year old...as described by the 20-something gal who has no kids, so the child could have been anywhere from 2 to 5 is my guess...was spinning and swinging her toy bear, trying to clear shelves. The mother yelled at her and told her to stop.

The 25 year old's reaction??? To tell off the mom for "abusing" the child in public. Abuse??? Have you tried reasoning with a toddler who is overtired and out of control??? And, ya know, sometimes even if your kid IS tired you have the choice of stopping to grab what you need...milk or whatever...with the kid in tow, or leaving the kid unsupervised to do it later. Neither is a great choice!

What got me is that when other people tried to kindly point out that this gal maybe didn't have the full picture she went ballistic, saying that anything that is said or done in public is her business and she feels it is her right to speak up whenever she feels like it.

Amazingly, the posts got crazier and crazier after that. I quit reading after it got to the point where the main person arguing with her was a guy who kept saying that there is no such thing as emotional abuse and that anyone who spanks once is an abuser, so yelling is a good thing.

I just kept thinking that I've been pretty darned lucky when we've gone to Disney. Neither kid has ever had a major melt-down and the people we've met have been for the greater part, wonderful. I hope I never end up in line next to either of the above people, lol!

About your neighbors...um...well...I had a K kiddo once who came to school bragging that mom had showed him and his brother how to steal bikes the night before...and how to lie when the owner comes looking for them. I think keeping your kids FAR from the neighboring crew is a very good idea.

You know the food comment was hotline-able. Had they not had Doritos in front of you earlier you would have had to have called. Not that you want to start something with them, but legally you have to call if the kids aren't being fed or supervised.

Just make sure your kids bring all their toys in whenever these kids are living nearby...it wouldn't surprise me to have things disappear from your backyard. If you don't have a lock on your gate, I think I'd put one on it so they can't let your dog out or get in to bother it.

Here's hoping mom's financial situation looks up soon so they can move back to wherever they came from!
