In reply to: Lori 's message, "Will your midwife attend the birth at the hospital?" on 18:40:04 08/05/06 Sat

I can also say that your story is just like my sister's. It's why she had a hysterectomy at age 26.

She was in labor over 24 hours with Tanner. She ended up with the big "Y" cut...over 150 stitches internally. It also tore her rectum. She had to have that repaired during the hysterectomy.

They used the vacuum to get Tanner out...he ended up majorly jaundiced because of it.

They told her she should have the hysterectomy right away, but she waited. The delivery with my niece went smoothly...but then the placenta wouldn't detatch, due to scar tissue from the first pregnancy. She nearly died. They had to give her repeated doses of nitroglycerin...they were about 5 minutes from doing the hysterectomy there and then when she finally quit hemoraging.

What I'm saying is....childbirth is an amazingly dangerous event. My delivery with Liam was as traumatic as what you describe. I had post traumatic stress syndrome for months. Nobody would acknowledge it. A lot of women can't even begin to understand what it is like to almost die in childbirth.

That said, if you have to see a doctor, share what you've told us. The fact that you've had many babies since Robert should be on your side. However, if the doc were to agree that this baby is too large for you to deliver, there is the option of a c-section.

It's nothing I'd recommend lightly, but if the baby is huge then the dangers of surgery may be preferable to the dangers of trying a vaginal delivery.

You have been really brave to pursue your dream of a large family. I always thought I'd have 5 kids. Three pregnancies resulting in 2 healthy babies are all I could do. Honestly, even if I were married I would have stopped at two...my immune issues make it just way too scary for me to do it again.

Be honest with your midwife about why this whole change of date concerns you. Tell her it's happened before...and the result. I'm sure she'll want what's best for you...and if at this point it isn't a home birth, she can be your advocate!
