We've stayed at four Super 8's in the past two weeks, for a total of 7 nights. What I found is that the quality of the motel is inversely related to the size of the town.

The one on the highway in Salina, KS was beautiful. The lobby was clean, the staff was friendly, and they had a nice indoor swimming pool. Everything was well kept up, our room was clean and quiet, and the free breakfast offered 8 kind of cereal, danishes, muffins, coffee, juices, milk, bread, etc. Our room had two beds, a table and chairs, a desk, and a recliner. The tv was newer and they had cable. They also had that computer for everyone's use.

The next one we stayed at was in Colorado Springs. Everything there was broken. The lobby was okay but the gal at the desk was busy talking to two of her friends (in Spanish) and took forever to check us in. The carpets were old, worn, and rolling. The ice machine was broken. The outdoor pool was too dirty to swim in. The indoor pool was clean enough to swim in, but it was in a big, delapidated room. No decor to speak of...just cement and peeling paint. The room itself was clean enough...but worn. It had two beds and a table and chairs. We came back at 6 pm the second day and the room hadn't been touched. I had to ask for clean towels. Also, annoyingly, although I'd paid for the two nights in advance, they deactivated the key card and I had to go have a new one made. The tv had a purple tint to it and was a bazillion years old. Their free breakfast consisted of two kinds of cereal, fruit, oatmeal, bread and English muffins, juice, milk and coffee. The dining area was VERY worn down...broken cases, broken machines. Oh, and when we got there the first night (at 9:30 pm their time!) the outside signs weren't lit up, so I drove past it and had to stop and call for directions!

The next night we went to the one in Canon City. It was nicely kept up and the owner was behind the desk and was friendly. The room was nice enough...the tv was newer and with cable (as did the first two). This motel was noisier, tho. It had doors that slammed shut when let go. Our second day there I saw the maids as we were popping in to grab stuff. One gal asked if I needed any services in the room. I told her just towels. Guess what? That night I had to go to the front desk and ask for clean washcloths. The room hadn't been touched! Their free breakfast was either little banana nut muffins or English muffins and juice and coffee. NO milk or cereal. We ended up eating out all three days we were there. We did get maid service the third day at least.

Finally, the night before last we stayed at a Motel 8 in Denver. I booked it based on what they said it offered in their little book of all their motels. Well, first, it was not in a great area of town. Luckily, there were a lot of other tourists there, so I felt better than if it had been empty. However, it was not clean. We only had 2 washcloths, and when I asked for more they gave us handtowels, saying they didn't have enough. Their pool was closed...the water was the color of tea! It was also horrifically noisy. We had some little kid stomping up and down the stairs outside our door repeatedly until after midnight. The clerk on duty when we checked in was one of the rudest people I ever met. It was about 8 pm and she had the lobby locked, so we had to go in to the "night lobby" which had bullet proof glass. When I asked about the safety of the area she started screaming at me about how she needed to eat dinner and she deserved and hour off and how it was too much work to lock and unlock the lobby, etc. She also got very snotty when I asked about the pool...told me if the the boys "absolutely HAD to swim" I should take them down the road and pay for them to swim at the public pool, although she had no idea what it's hours were or if it was even open. OMG. They didn't even have cable...we had about 7 channels on an older tv. The room had the two beds and the desk with two chairs. No table even. What a joke.

So, I've learned my lesson. From now on I will only stay at a Motel 8 if it is in the middle of the boonies. In larger cities I'll use other hotel chains. To me this is sad. I've stayed at Motel 8's almost exclusively for the past 8 years...but not anymore. They don't offer the VIP perks like they used to, and their quality is all over the place now!
