The Electoral college is a perfect example of why the system DOES work. Had Gore spent a little more time in a couple of states trying for their swing votes he could have won.

If the electoral college goes away you can say goodbye to candidates ever going to Utah, Rhode Island, Montana, and a few other states with no people in it. The President is a representative of the country, that means states as well as their people. If you want popular, be ready for candidates to spend all their time in NY and California, with small visists to other middle of the pack states, for fill votes.
