Subject: The Great Dive

Swishtail the otter took a deep breath, closing his eyes when he did. He stood on the wall above the pond looking down. He knew his mission in life now. To jump of the wall and into the pond. It would take awhile maybe to get enough confidence and courage to leap off but he knew one day he would do so. His friend Streamback the otter came up to him. "Watcha doin' mate?" he asked Swishtail. Swishtail looked at Streamback a moment before answering. "Im gonna dive off of this 'ere wall staight into the pond." His voice was quiet and calm but Streamback roared with laughter. "Hahahaha! The day you do that, hahahaha, i'll bake you the finest hotroot soup ever made! Hahahahahaha!" He walked off laughing uproariously but Swishtail just stared back down at the pond. He knew he would do it. That was all that mattered.

The next morning Swishtail was swimming in the pond. He measured the depth and made some calculations in his head. The depth of the pond was great enough so that he wouldn't hit the bottom on his dive. He measured the size of the ponds edges and went up on to the wall. He could make it unharmed. But not today. No, not today. He needed more confidence. Tomorrow, perhaps.
A mouse came up to him and asked what he was doing. Swishtail told him and he also went away laughing. Soon every dibbun knew about what he planned to accomplished. Everyone laughed at him. But they wanted to see him do it. He walked off calmly and left them chattering among themselves about how he would injure himself and such. He would show them. Tomorrow he would do it. Tomorrow.

"JUMP! JUMP! JUMP!" the crowd chanted below. Swishtail just stared down at the pond. He limbered up a bit and stared down some more. His neck started to hurt from looking down so often but he didn't care. He stepped back and prepared to jump. The crowd, sensing what he was about to do, yelled encouragement at him. Well, Swishtail thought to himself, better then them laughing at me. He ran to the edge and threw himself off. It seemed to go in slow motion. Swishtail dove down with his body straight as an arrow. He aimed himself at the centre of the pond. Closer and closer it came to him. All thought left from his mind. It was just him and the water. Finally, he was splashing into the water going just as fast to the bottom. Still no thought. He slowed to a stop and started back upwards. Still no thought.
He came to the surface and cheers arupted everywhere for him. Now he thought. And he smiled. He had done it! He had completed his mission in life! He leapt out into the crowd which swarmed around him. He picked out Streamback and waded through the crowd towards him. Streamback clapped him on the back and said "You did it mate! I always sai you would!" Swishtail had to yell to be heard, but Streamback heard him. Swishtail said "I believe you promised to make me some 'otrrot soup, matey!" Streamback laughed and headed towards the kitchens.
