Doven Vilz paced about the barracks. Soldiers came swiftly to attention as the huge wildcat stalked past. The mighty descendant of Ungatt Trunn covered the room in a few long strides, his deep black eyes noting every detail. There were a few new recruits with very wrinkled uniforms and unsharpened spears—he would deal with them later. Doninha, one of his captains, entered at the doorway and saluted smartly with her spear.
“Might’ness, Zorro an’ ‘is patrol be comin’ now,” the ferret said.
“From where?” Doven asked her.
“A liddle stream, Might’ness,” she said. “They captured a boat wid three mice an’ a mole.”
“Three mice and a mole?” he fumed. “What do I want with three mice and a mole?”
“Ah, t’throw them in the dungeons Might’ness?”
“Wrong!” The wildcat grabbed Doninha by the neck, and shoved her against the wall. “Now, what do I do with my prosioners?”
“Y-y-ye question em, Might’ness,” the ferret gasped.
“Then get them up here,” Doven growled.
“Y-y-yes, Might’ness,” she said, as the wildcat released her, and she hurried out the door. The wildcat took one last searching look around, and his soldiers quickly stood to attention as his glance passed over them; then turned and left.
His purple cloak swirled behind him as he stalked up the stairs toward his chamber. The symbol of New Kotir rippled on the back; a silhoutte of a fierce wildcat overlapped by two crossed swords with diamonds glittering on the hilts. The real swords were tucked into his thick belt and scabbard, where he always left them, not daring to trust any of his soldiers or servants to keep them for him.
He reached the chamber and sat down in a large and comfortable chair at the other end, his mind working cunningly. He was the mighty descendant of Ungatt Trunn, who, somehow, had survived, and was ready to finish the work his ancestor never had. He had taken up the name of New Kotir from Ungatt Trunn’s brother and niece, Lord Greeneyes and Tsarmina, who had ruled a castle called Kotir in southern Mossflower. That was, before they had been defeated by simple woodlanders. Doven pounded the small table in front of him, and it broke easily.
“Get me another one,” he snarled at the small hedgehog servant hidden in the corner of the room. The hedgehog quickly brought another table out, and took away the broken one. There was always a spare piece of furniture lying around; it was only too often that Doven broke one.
The wildcat smiled in satisfaction. He would not be like that. He had built his castle in northern Mossflower, and was conquering it from the top down. He now had all of Mossflower, up to the river fords, under the control of the vermin of New Kotir. The only thing that stood in his way was a half-built abbey. Redwall Abbey. It was the home of the woodlanders that had defeated the original Kotir forces. He wouldn’t have given it a second thought if those same creatures had not defeated his ancestors; but now, he was preceeding with care and caution.
He thought of the woodlanders Zorro’s patrol had captured. What were they? Oh, yes, three mice and a mole. They fit in perfectly with his plan. Surely they would have information about Redwall Abbey.
