Hey Angela, who do you think will take the crown this year? I personally think Suching is the best looking of all the contestants, so cute! but her height might hurt her chances...

What if contestants have plastic surgery?
How can this be a fair pageant if contestant can artificially create beauty?

What a big upset.

#3 Jenifer did really well, although a bit too confident, but deserved her win nonetheless. Not really a surprise to most.

But the other two?

Some obvious standouts were robbed.

The competition night is this Saturday!! Gosh time flies!!
I believe we have a few strong contenders this year, but it's quite hard to judge as its up to their performance on the night. Having said that, I wish all the girls the best of luck and hope they all enjoy the evening. Remember to smile girls!
=)

The Results for Webmaster Choice Awards for Miss Chinese Melbourne will be available this Friday 24th November. So stay tuned!

The result for Miss Chinese Sydney was good. Let's hope both Melbourne and Sydney representatives will do well for Australia in Hong Kong at Miss Chinese International 2007.

Im not sure if you all have heard but MCI 2007 has changed slightly. They've included 3 contestants from Mainland China! So I rekon it's going to be tougher for everyone. Should be interesting.Yikes!!

Hi Angela,

What do you think of this year's contestants? Any favourites so far?

Who do you think will win? And who do you think should win? Who do you think would have a better chance representing Melbourne to complete in HK?

What do you think of each of the contestants?

Thank you.

Very intersted..

the winner of this years competiton doesn;t deserve to go to hk. She can'e even speak cantonese or mandarin and what does she know about chinese culture. How the hell can she go to hong kong and represent miss CHINESE melbourne!!!! This is silly. We're been the laughing stock of hong kong for too long. We should send someone who has a least SOME chinese cultural knowledge and can speak CHINESE!!!

Hmmm...hey Angela did u realise that this year both the winners of Miss Sydney & Miss Melbourne are:

1. number 12
2. 18 years old
3. slightly shorter (compared to pageant specs)
4. Shanghainese origin

Haha...reckon they'd become good friends in HK next year?

I believe out of the top three in the twelve contestant would be NUMBERS: 8 (she is really hot!), 2 (pritty) and lucky last 1 (also good looking). But I agree with Author "B”. I would also love to see Jane Wong win because the contest is called 'miss Melbourne Chinese quest 2005' and Jane is born in Melbourne but the other contestant is born overseas which has nothing to do with Melbourne.

Thumbs Down
There is one problem I dislike about the coverage was the photos in visiting the elderly page had contestant NUMBER 5# on every single photo beside one picture *WHERE ARE ALL THE OTHER CONTESTENTS PHOTO* >:-( I don’t want to only see one contestants face on every photo it is a bit unfair for other contestants don’t you think

Way to go Jess! Congratulations to her victory at MCI 2005! Also my home town girl Fala! Congratulations in yet another beauty title MCI 2005 1 st runner up! I just like seeing her back and back on the tv. She is beautiful. I think the judges should have chose Fala as the winner than Lennie. However, Melbourne has made history with the first MCI runner up title, first top 5 contestant, also jessie is the highest placed contestant in MCI. Good job! Can't wait until next year where the beauties compete again for the international title. I just love the music of MCI.

Hey there!

well for most of you i would love to see jane wang win because seriously she is born in melbourne, and everyone in the competition is born in overseas, and really where are the people born in australia, maybe the Australian Born Chinese (abc) girls dont know that this competition is out, if they all knew how to read the chinese magazine then maybe they would enter, the reason i knew about this and i'm myself cant read any chinese, is that i always see my grandma reading this magazine and then i go through it looking at pictures only, and myself i arent fully chinese. but the most important thing that all those girls that got in and enter all the best and wish you all

Angela,

I have been monitoring your website for quite sometime, it is delightful to see that you have generated much interest on MCCQ within the Chinese community, you certainly deserve my many thanks for the hard work. On the other hand I am really disappointed with some of the comments made by people who obviously have no idea on what the Miss Chinese Community Quest is about and a total lack of respect to the contestants.

The CYSM official website is currently under development and will be available shortly for people who wants to be further educated on the quest.

It is not my intention to open up a can of worms in this forum as freedom of speech in this country is something that we all enjoy. However, I do want to make a few points:
1. The language used has been ugly and was totally unnecessary.
2. It takes a lot of determination and courage for the contestants to enter the quest, let alone performing on stage. These young women deserves our upmost support and respect. So, please respect yourself by showing the same for others.
3. Unlike the beauty pageants that have been held by other cites and countries, the Miss Chinese Community Quest (Melbourne) is purely a community event with a charity focus, it has no commerical interest and is a non-profitable function. Everyone involved are either full-time professionals or students, we don't get paid for the time and energy that we have all invested in past events.
4. The winners are judged based on a number of pre-defined criterias using an universal scoring system. It will be morally wrong and disgracful to select someone just to suit the Miss Chinese International Pageant title. We are proud of our chosen winner(s), they are unique in their own way (Aussie Chinese girls so as speak) and they need our support all the way. Let's not forget the entertainment culture in Hong Kong is vastly different to our way of living.

Lastly, if you want to complaint to the organiser, do contact CYSM (number has been provided by Angela) and leave me your details.

Regards,
President of CYSM

The people that keep posting messages using a different but from the SAME IP address .... GET OVER IT! You have your own point of view and have a right to defend whatever you think you need to defend, but please RESPECT the freedom of speech and that people to have their own opinions. And at least have the Courage to put your real name on your messages!

Simply waving your hand and flagging them away will NOT help the event. Maybe you should LISTEN and think how the event can take these into consideration.

FYI, there are heaps of beautiful girls who are intelligent and have good backgrounds in Melbourne. You just need a way to publicise the event. 80% of Melbourne wouldn't not know how to even enter. Credits to Angela, if her site wasn't here ... 95% of people would not even know abou the pageant.

Melbourne is only a tiny place in the world. Expand your horizons.

talk about dominating titles, I don't think this years titles were dominated, miss photogenic obviously goes to a pretty girl which cindy is, and miss charitable to the person who raises the most money for charity, which means that this years winner is quite humanitarian because she actually raised so much money. did anyone see Miss Toronto - the top 3 girls collected ALL 9 titles. now that is domination, what about all the other girls? i think the organisers of that should have made it more fair...

After reading complaints about MCM on several issues including:

1. Quality level of contestants
2. Poor quality entertainment/hospitality
3. Heights of contestants.

I'd like to point out that MCM remains strictly a charity event (no prizes for winners) unlike the Miss Chinese Sydney or Vancouver or whereever its an official competition - where the stakes are higher and more monetary renumerations/prizes are involved. I'd also like to point out that our Chinese population is no match in hell for cities like Sydney or Canadian or American cities with sizeable Chinese populations like New York, Los Angeles, Toronto or Vancouver. So with a limited talent pool to begin with, its harder to find an absolute gem.

MCM has two options really, to go fully competitive and become a full fledging paegent, this draws in larger crowds I suppose and ups the ante on the quality stakes (better and more choice for judges), that or either (I dont know how it currently works) but Miss HK Int. should really only select overseas Chinese winners with a REAL chance of winning the title and not selecting them to make up the numbers. This will avoid any embarassement for Melbourne or main topic for gossip in the future.

I suppose to a large extent, our previous winners were minuet and this has seriously decreased any chances of winning, note that most winners were around the 5'7" (~170cm) mark - Bernice Liu, Linda Chung.

The Miss Chinese Community Quest, Melbourne 2004 is a community event. All proceeds from contestants fundraising and the night goes towards the Salvation Army.

All tables on the night were for 10 pax, with some at 11 pax but only upon request of the guests. There were no tables of 15 as somebody has falsely commented, the hotel doesn't have tables big enough and for OH&S reasons would not allow it to begin with.

The event ran ontime, predinners scheduled for 7-7.30pm, dinner served, then show starts at 8.30pm. How was the 'running late' determined in various feedbacks? How would you know what the schedule was?

As Angela has mentioned, this is a live show, not a video production, you would expect delays here and there. Although there were no significant ones on the night.

There was no pre-event judging, it was all done on the night, and according to their performances on the night. And yes, it was purely a coincidence that top 3 wore pink cheongsams. The winners were not chosen because of their height, that is unfair to them as their performances that night led to their win. Give them the credit they deserve.

Miss Photogenic - the online web poll is from this unofficial website, and has nothing to do with the actual Miss Chinese Community Quest & its results.

Jess is a deserving, beautiful & talented representative of our Chinese community and I'd like to take this opportunity to wish Jess all the luck in the world for MCI where she will undoubtedly do well & make Melbourne proud.

$110?!?!?!...waste of money! i paid the same as everyone else yet they put me on a table of 15 wen there was supposed to b only 10 per table. If the hall was crowded with large numbers then fair enuff...but there was obviously empty tables that were not even used. My eating utensils were all cluttered underneath other pplz plates...there wasnt even enuff space to move my arms to eat...the entree (eleplant) wat the heo??? im not a rabbit. The main course and dessert was however quite satisfactory but the bread roll was stale n foul...im going to alert the health authorities. Wat i ate was worth $20 max not a $110. The view of the stage was poor i couldnt even c the contestant that i was supporting n there for...n those big side screen things were blurry and bias towards particular contestants. SO basically i wen to support a blurry screen of only a few girls the entire nite! Oh...n another thing, i arrived there at 7:00pm wen it was sheduled to commence but i was left there starving with a crappy entree n stale bread until after 8:30pm.
So jst wanna let everyone noe how the experience was like n dat u pplz didnt miss much n dat i prob wont ever go again but i hope this msg reaches the organisers so they can realise that they need to start organising instead of wasting pplz time n money!!!!

Every contestant that enters the Quest is a winner, whether they actually win a title or not. The girls should be congratulated on their efforts. Those that are petty enough to complain about every little thing, should really get a life, cos no matter who the winner was you'd find something to say. Waste of money, I think not. You pay $70-80 to go to uni balls these days, and what do you get? For $110 you're getting 3 course dinner, drinks, a full night of entertainment, which costs money you know, as well as giftbags. What did you expect to get for your money? And those that got closer & 'better' seats actually paid more for their tickets, cos there are two price ranges.

Hi there,

You obviously have the wrong person. I am in no part associated with the MCM organisation which is in fact CYSM = Chinese Youth Society of Melbourne. If you are displeased with anything, u should contact them directly or seek the person whom u have bought the tickets from.

I merely maintain an "unofficial" site of Miss Chinese Melbourne. If u have read here:
www.geocities.com/misschinesemelbourne/about it states clearly.

Unfortunately, I believe all pageants never run on schedule. That kinda happens often and alot are over 1-2 hrs late. If you take the famous renowned Miss World Canada Pageant, they were 1.5 hrs behind schedule. On broadcast television, you wont notice as all the editing has been taken place, however when ur there "live" its a different story. As I had stated in the forum, there should be a few other ticket pricing involved to accomodate others.

The competition nite, is all based on each contestants individual performance in each segment. So I do believe that the judges do judge on the night and the scores are tallied up at the end and I presume there is also a private interview panel.

I do believe u have posted a few messages on the forum, if you want to contact CYSM direct, please phone (03) 9891-6594

Other than that, I must moderate the forum to protect other people's intergrity. I do believe ur voice has been heard and read by many others, but it doesnt mean that I want other people to be hurt along the way.

I hope you understand.

Regards,

Angela

why does the quest now require swimsuit modelling?? It's not supposed to be a beachwear event after all..
Isn't this a "quest"? The girls should dress more decently....they're not there to be exploited!
MCCQ should take off the whole 'swimsuit modelling' or there will be less and less contestants over the coming years..there are alot of girls out there who are very decent and beautiful just the way they are, without having to act like swimwear models.

I think ppl should stop complaining about the ability of the winner to either speak chinese or know much about chinese culture. And just cos your favourite contestant doesn't win, doesn't mean the others are crap or the winner is undeserving. I heard she performed really well on the night, and thats what counts isn't it. How well spoken and graceful she is, how she carries herself. All my friends who went to it say that she did really well and really deserved to win. Before ppl complained about the girls height, and now she's tall enuf, ppl complain about her looks or smarts or languages. Doesn't it ever stop. Can't ppl just be happy with a tall, beautiful & talented representative. If you are so unhappy with who represents Melbourne, why don't you enter. Give the girls some credit, takes a lot of guts to get up there and do what they do.

Hi all...
this years' competition nite was quite good and the theme was also interestin and different. It was a shame to c thou that only 3 girls dominated the awards segment. The top 3 placings also won the other awards such as miss photogenic and charitable. It was also obvious that the rest of the contestants didnt receive flowers...??? it would hav been a nice gesture to have them receive someting in appreciation for their efforts. Also there was a clear bias towards height. The top 3 placings were all in the higher group ranking but some of the girls who werent as talk were just as beautiful and talented.
By the way...can anyone explain y miss photogenic wasnt given to contestant no. 12? didnt she win it throu online voting??? It should only b fair that each contestant can only carry one title instead of 2. This would equal out the competition range and be less predictable.

Subject: Ticket Pricing

(203.192.166.206)

I actually went to last year's Competition Night, but luckily for me, I was able to procure a complimentary ticket and avoided what potentially could be a huge dent in my hip pocket.

No doubt the ticket is very expensive. However, after watching the event and considering what had been on offer the ticket pricing all of a sudden seemed a lot more reasonable.

It was a "black-tie" event. A very nice hall was booked in the Melbourne Convention Centre, the stage was well set and all the lighting and music was quite professionally done. A three course dinner was provided and there were plenty of support and catering staff. All of which costs money. At the end of the night, I was actually wondering that even with the $110 per head price, whether the organisors can recover the costs from just the ticket sales. The answer, I suspect, is probably negative. But then there were the sponsors and they can make a huge difference.

Anyway, the point I want to make is that whilst the organisors are trying to make this Final an "upper-class" event, they could and should consider offering 2 types of ticket. One will entitle the ticket holder to a seat on a round table closest to the stage, a three course meal and alcohol; the other just simply gives you a seat (may be depending on how close the seat is to the stage, further price levels can be set). So the layout of the hall will be: a few round tables closest to the stage for the judges, other important people and whoever can afford a premium price, behind them are rows and rows of seats. This gives people a choice depending on their budget. If people can afford $250 per head, they can enjoy all the luxuries in front of the stage. But people with a smaller budget can nevertheless still attend the event. If the hall is sufficiently big, e.g. capable of accommodating thousands of people, it will make the atmosphere of the event a lot better too. The Final can potentially be much "bigger" and more successful!

All that being said, however (and excuse me for the writer's diarhea), I cannot foresee a drastic change being made in the near future. Maybe I should try to get on the Committee of organisors and make things happen :D

Any help Angela (or anyone else)?

I was quite surprised to read so many narrow minded opinions regarding entries for the half asains chicks. My opinion is, good on them as for them to enter a Chinese Community contest means that they still have a strong chinese hertiage in them just like the full blooded chinese chicks in the entry. At the least, they look very asain to me, it's not like they put a very-western-looking-blonde chick who's grandfather's grandfather is chinese?!!
PS, doesn't #2, Steph look awesome? She's a fun loving girl with a great personality, combined with her appearance.. i wonder what more can you ask for?

There has been a bit of criticism of the MCCQ candidates, both in this forum and in other forums (sydney). Whilst I respect free opinions, I think people should also respect that these girls all have their own unique talents/aspects, and most importantly the courage to participate.

What has been forgotten, is that the MCCQ is different to other pageants. I noticed on the MCS page that there are details of the prizes won. The Melbourne girls are not in it for the prizes/money. The MCCQ is a charity & community work based event, isnt it?

Angela, perhaps you could give some background to the MCCQ? This would give the 12 contestants the credit they deserve.

For people out there, do you reckon it is a pre-requisite that our winner should have a decent height (e.g. 170cm+)? I believe so anyway. Of course looks, figure, brain and so on are all important judging criteria, however many of these criteria are very subjective, leading to controversial decisions. Take looks for example, we know beauty is in the eye of beholder (as the Poll on this website so overwhelmingly demonstrates). Hence we need something concrete, something that can be measured objectively. Height is one such criterion that comes to mind. So are some other "measurements" if you know what I mean...hehe...Anyway, If we look at the mother of all beauty pageants: Miss Universe, we would have observed that all previous winners of Miss universe are never short little cuties, they are all tall bombshells :)

Hi Angela

While I was checking out the MCM 2004 contestants profiles, I noticed that Amanda Ong's height is shown as 5'5. Checking other contestant's profiles in relation to what was specified on their own country's comp details, I find that they only exaggerated Amanda's height. I know that Amanda is only 5'3 3/4 but who cares? Last year's 2nd runner up Diana Wu was only 5'4 as well. Why is this the case? Is it b/c all the other contestants are tall?

Jess

It's not really about judging people on petty criteria, such as height, etc...we aren't nitpicking. It's about the whole idea/point of the pagent...who is it representing, what it is meant to achieve, and how well the organisers are doing it. Things like language speaking skills matter, just as beauty and height might, because it is relevant to what the pagent is aimed at achieving. I know - the organisers need to make a mission statement and then go from there in terms of re-framing the criteria.

Clarification for Miss Chinese Community Quest Melbourne.

I believe that some people are wondering why Miss Chinese Melbourne is called "Miss Chinese Community Quest Melbourne", instead of following other titles ie: Miss Chinese Toronto, Miss Chinese Vancouver Pageant etc etc.

Reason being is that:
1. Its not a pageant, thats why its called a "Quest"
2. As all other MCI- participating cities are called Pageants, they have swimsuit sections, however with MCCQ, there is no swimsuit section
3. Recognises girls that have been involved in Community based or charity work
4. MCCQ each year sponsors a charity event. Eg. Salvation Army, Red Cross etc. The money raised goes to that particular organisation.
5. The 12 participating contestants of MCCQ are involved in this, hence the title "Miss Chinese Community Quest Melbourne".

I believe after this clarification, everyone will have a better understanding.

Best Regards,

Angela

Hey firstly thanks for putting up the pictures. Its nice to get an early glimpse of the finalists of this year!

The poll is a great idea, I am sure we are all very interested in the result...BUT I tried to vote and my vote did NOT count. :( What I did was I took a look at the results so far, then did my vote, but it did not add the vote into the tally. Tried it again and it says I've voted already! :( How valid is this poll I wonder if votes are being missed...

Hi Angela,(If u are Angela Tang this is 4 u)

As i was reading this guest book someone mention u were a winner in the pageant, but i knew it can't be u cos it said "Tanya". So i got confused, Maybe u were a winner but not 1st. i assume U came 2nd place instead and got the Miss Friendship award as well. Because in every reply in this guest book u sound so polite, nice and friendly. Then when i looked at the pictures. i was half right. U DID GET THE MISS FRIENDSHIP AWARD..AND U DESERVE IT GIRL. U SOUND SOOO SWEET AND FRIENDLY.And also i reckon u should of got 2nd place as well, u are one beauty wif looks, intelligent, and a kind heart. Wish u the best in everything and btw great site. bye

I think a "what happened" to section would be nice if think it was approapriate. Don't know much much you can pry into the former Miss Chinese Melbourne's lives, but it would probably get some entertainment value if it would be possible and the former beauties were willing.

Nice. I think due to the lower number of Chinese in Melbourne than say Toronto or Vancouver, we always perform worse than they do at the MCI events in HK.
