Well, on the issue of "Chinese awareness", I seriously doubt that you guys can find a decent Chinese speaker from all Asian girls raised/born in the Western hemisphere.

Grab a video of the Miss HK International Paegant and you'll see. As I recall, the speaking (and I might as well include writing capabilities) of Bernice Liu, Linda Chung and Mandy Cho are absolutely horrible to say the least. The result of months of intensive training on Cantonese is what you see with these girls (as yet, its still quite damn bad). It seems like these girls are blurting out the cantonese with a very thick English accent. Mind you, Linda Chung is the best out of the bad lot, but I even find her CHinese very very bad by any standards.

As for the CHinese knowledge bit, I dare say these girls will fail to list a Chinese city outside of Hong Kong SAR, Beijing and Shanghai and probably wont even know the last dynasty (Han or non Han btw) to rule over China. I'm pretty sure most arent even aware of the fact Hong Kong was a former British colony.

Furthermore, I'd like to add the ones you see in the Miss HK INTERNATIONAL (not MISS HK) that have any idea about the CHinese language or history come from quasi Chinese countries or ones where Chinese culture is still influencial (re: Malaysia, Singapore (virtually a HK), Taiwan (virtually a Chinese province) and Macau).

I've seen tapes where contestants from Thailand and the Phillipines cannot understand a word of Cantonese/Mandarin/Whatever chinese dialect and usually use interpreters. Just on a side note, there are many Chinese speaking Chinese in Vietnam, I wonder why they are NEVER represented rather than those (IMHO who are less sinicised) from the countries I metioned.

Anyway, thats my 2cs.
