Subject: Deaf Competition Dogs

Does anyone else here compete in performance events with their deaf dogs? If so, what do you compete in, and how, if at all, have you trained/showed differently due to your pups deafness?

I currently am showing my 14 month old deaf Sheltie in APDT Rally-O and just starting in AKC agility. AKC doesn't allow totally deaf dogs to compete, but the dog must have "useful hearing," which is described as any hearing. My sheltie hears loud noises out of one ear, enough to be considered "useful hearing." So, we're competing in AKC agility, although I run him as though he were stone deaf. I am hoping one day AKC will allow spayed/neutered deaf dogs to compete, if they can abide by the same rules as the other dogs.

I'd be interested in reading how others with deaf dogs are doing out in the competition world.

-Kristin
