Schanuzers are known barkers. The behavior you're talking about is a part of the breed. I've had several schnauzers in class, and many barked excessively at people and other dogs. I found that some of the Schnauzers' barking was a mild form of aggression. That may be what your trainer meant when saying it was his was of dealing with things. However, again without seeing the dog myself, I can't judge what type of barking you are dealing with.

If the behavior really bothers you, I'd go back to the trainer you were working with and get some additional ideas. Good trainers will always give the least adversive suggestions on how to deal with an issue first. But, it's not the only way to handle the situation. Your trainer will have other options for you to try - often many other options.

Schnauzers are also very stubborn dogs, and they often rule their people rather than the other way around. That's why continuing to train with your trainer over a longer period of time would be advised in this case.
