I do that - I even sign to the cats! It's such a habit that I sign to my hearing foster dogs too, and they learn the signs more quickly than they learn the verbal commands.

I knew my first dog was deaf when I adopted her at ~6 months of age. At the time I thought "yeah, so? I'll just sign to her!" and I've never had a moment's regret for adopting her. Her name is Penny, she's a bench-bred English Setter, and she's now 5 years old. She's my "heart dog".

I also have 3 other deaf dogs - 3-year old Blizzard (a Dogo Argentino), 2-year old Glenys (a field-bred English Setter), and 21-month old Lumi Spot (an American Bulldog). I also foster, train, and place deaf dogs and currently have a 21-month old deaf Dogo Argentino male and an 11-week old Dogo Argentino female. I recently placed a deaf pit bull pup and a 4-year old deaf Catahoula girl.

Welcome Pixie, Kaia, and Lulu!

Glenys on the left, Lumi Spot on the right. Best friends.
