Subject: Man, we lost a few this year

Just a note to remember those we lost this past year, in addition to my mother. People that, of course, I didn't know but hearing of their passing made me conscious of my own mortality and how quickly time is passing.

Michael Crichton. I loved his books and Jurrasic Park remains one of my favorite movie series.

Marjel Barrett - Nurse Chapel, Luxanna Troi, and the ship's computer on practically every Trek there was. She was responsible for keeping Gene Roddenbury's vision alive and having her gone is just a reminder of others who are also gone; the actors portraying Scotty, McCoy, and Sarek. With the new Trek coming out, will the current generation even remember them?

And now, I hear Eartha Kitt is gone. Catwoman. God, I feel so old.

Age may not be a state of being but only a foot note in the live of all those that exist. Even the acknowledgement of ones age is transitory. Today I feel young and alive, tomorrow I feel old and worn out. Even death may only be transitory. In Buddhism and Hindu this life is but one of many; our essence being passed down from one being to another growing and changing. In this way Gene Roddenberry, Marjel Barrett, DeForest Kelly, James Doohan, and all others mentioned may now be sitting on their mother’s lap watching the Star Trek-a-thon and Space channel.

But even if reincarnation and an after life does not exist all of these people continue to exist threw their creations. My first exposure to Star Trek were the original series reruns on Sundays at eleven in the early 80s. I gained more faith and hope through the words of Gene Roddenberry then those printed in a book. Will these stories live on? Yes and they will be revered as William Shakespeare, Emily Dickinson, and Mary Shelley.

Even your words will be past down from generation to generation. When your website is gone and e-mails go unanswered scores of you loyal devotees will build monuments to you inspiration and talent. Through your works you will continue to touch and inspire others and from them yet more.

No one ever truly dies they live on in the thoughts and hearts of others.

This year did see a loss of great talent. Paul Newman, George Carlin, Estelle Getty, Charlton Heston (just watched the greatest movie of all time, Ben-Hur yesterdday) and my all time favorite star and dancer Cyd Charisse.

Also we lost Stargate's Don S. Davis too. Better known to all Gaters as General Hammond. Man, that one I really felt.

I met the guy once a few years back at FACTS in Belgium. Real nice guy. Warm and very cool, real laid back with his fans. And always up for a chat. He talked to my older brother for 10 minutes about a comic book my brother asked him to sign, even called Corin Nemec (Jonas Quin) over to have a look at it. Very nice guys.

Cool guy, its so sad he died, he wasn't even that old yet, only 65 or something.

We'll miss him and Majel Barret on FEDCON 2009 in Bonn.
I take comfort in the fact that they'll be remembered for years and years to come by fans.

Best wishes to all, and lets remember the ones that sadly fell away from us over the last year.

Bernie Mac

I thought the new Trek had Majel in it? I really miss the old Trek actors that we lost, TOS was such a big part of my early childhood... but life's a cycle. The best we can do is keep those people alive in our memories and do what we can to introduce them to a new generation... Gina I think you do a pretty good job of keeping Trek alive, better than many of us "fans".

Thanks.

What? The voice of the ship's computer in ST is dead? And Don S. Davis too?

Freaking Maelstrom this year has been...

Another for the list of the fallen:

Heath Ledger.
