Subject: here you go bfny, bidding fast & furious for Davis ...

... NOT. brownscums just got what the market would bear for him:

POSTED 10:45 a.m. EDT; UPDATED 3:30 p.m. EDT, August 22, 2005 (from profootballtalk.com rumors section and Chris Mortensen)

PATS PLUCK DAVIS FROM BROWNS

Gone but hardly forgotten in New England, former Pats defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel has done some business with his old team, sending Browns receiver Andre Davis to the two-time defending world champs. Chris Mortensen of ESPN reports that the Patriots shipped a fifth-round pick to the Browns in exchange.

Davis was rumored to be headed to Seattle in the latter stages of the offseason, after the team had selected Braylon Edwards with the third overall pick in the draft. Talk of a trade died down while Edwards was unsigned.

Last week, the team granted Davis permission to shop his services. Antonio Bryant has performed very well in camp, and Edwards and veteran Dennis Northcutt have been solid as well, making Davis expendable.

A second-round pick of the Browns in the 2002 draft, Davis has played in 39 games, with 19 starts. He has 93 career receptions for 1,412 yards and 13 touchdowns. Davis also handled some kick and punt returns in 2002 and 2003, including a 95-yard kick return for a score in his rookie season.

Davis is scheduled to earn $481,250 in 2005, the final year of his rookie deal. Unless the Pats sign him to an extension, he will be an unrestricted free agent in March 2006.

Based on a $1.3 million signing bonus Davis received in 2002, the Browns will carry $325,000 in dead money under the salary cap this year. Since it's the last year of his contract, however, the trade triggers no further cap hit.

In New England, Davis will join a relatively crowded house that includes David Givens, Deion Branch, Tim Dwight, David Terrell, and Troy Brown. The team's interest in Davis will naturally spark speculation as to whether one of those five guys might be in danger of not making the team.

The Pats outbid the Seahawks and Eagles for Davis, according to Mortensen. Philly offered a conditional seven that could've increased to a five. Seattle offered a sixth rounder. Per Mortensen, the Chiefs were mulling an offer but never made one.

also, none of the assistants (extensions of the HC) would be there without Crennel so that's a moot counter.
