Subject: HUGE turnout
In reply to: coyotyl 's message, "record turnout there too?" on 17:08:13 11/02/04 Tue

The voters were coming out of the woodwork... I pollwatched over in the 4th precinct and we had all kinds of provisional ballots coming in. People on Medicaid registered by SRS, etc.

There are roughly 25,000 registered voters in the whole County so this was over 60% turnout for a lowly County Attorney's race!

By way of comparison, George Bush WON Crawford County with just over 7000 votes in the last election. IF you had told me in October we were going to get nearly 7,000 votes I'd have started calling my brother Mr. County Attorney. I was guessing 6,000 votes would take it all till they started talking about record turnout about a month or so ago.

Bud, I wish I'd have had your phone number because that's what we pulled AFTER enduring a PR disaster.

We knew our opponent was dirty and was up to something, but we didn't know what it was, because my brother's record is clean. Well....

I should preface this by saying that you have to have all ads in by 3 PM on Friday. We'd endured a very dirty campaign, but at least publically the ads were of the contrast style rather than outright attack ads meaning that even when you said something bad about the other guy, you balanced it with something good about yourself on the same issue.

Well we ran the contrast ad we'd been running for some time, but our opponent pulled out all the stops. He put my brother's picture in the paper with the headline "Advocate for Victims?".

Then he printed a story from some woman in Cherokee County who alleged among other things that my brother signed a plea bargain without her approval (lie - the plea bargain was signed by my brother's boss), that she never got the chance to sign the plea bargain (ask Law Shark - victims don't sign plea bargains, lawyer's do and the opponent knows that full well), that Steve had her kicked out of his office (sorta true - she was swinging her fists at him and cussing him out at the time he picked up the phone and told her to either calm down or he'd have her removed) that Steve was an idiot who objected to her testimony on the stand and everybody was staring at Steve in disbelief(umm could it be people were staring because she referred to Steve as a "cocksucker" in court?) Oh and that Steve was not worthy to be County Attorney and call me, but didn't list her phone number.

After all that Steve got her and her husband $5,000 restitution for the accident she was in. Her hubby thanked Steve and apologized for his wife's bizarre conduct. Then we heard nothing from her for over 2 years till the weekend before Steve's election when she slammed him out of the blue in huge ads in the Saturday, Sunday and Monday newspapers.

The way I responded was as follows... Steve had helped a family whose son in law was killed in an accident. We called her all weekend and finally caught her home on Sunday night. She agreed to drive up from Joplin Missouri to meet us. I shot a photo of her and Steve hugging in the morning and got her to record an ad. Then I scrambled to the radio station and changed our ad. After that I ran over to the newspaper and put up a new ad of Steve with her and a copy of a letter she sent to the Attorney General praising Steve. In retrospect I just wish Steve had told me about her a LOT sooner, because those were the best ads we ran the whole campaign and people barely got a chance to get exposed to them...

Anyway here's the links for the stuff I did. Would love to hear what you would have done... The print ad sucks, but I was working on a tight deadline just to get it in by election day.
