Subject: In Memory of my Poppa

My grandfather, Russell Howard Dondaldson Jr., passed away Feb. 28, after a long battle with Alzhiemer's Disease. From the Sunday before to the wee hours of that Saturday morning, Poppa struggled to hang on after getting pnemonia from aspiration. He was 77 years old. He was a cook on board a ship in WWII. Married my grandmother and had 2 daugthers, 10 years apart. He took in his cousin's son at age 9 and raised him as his own. Poppa has been the main positive priesthood influence in my life. He stressed the importance of family and always being there for each other.

One of my fondest memories of him was when I was 5 yrs old and was walking home from school. A storm came up and it was thundering and light'ning. I walked back to the school and called Poppa, he drove 20 mins to come get me. My Mama was so mad I had bothered him. Poppa said that was alright, "That's what I'm here for."

Poppa had 19 grandchildren and 10 grandchildren, the 11th due in May. His influence will be felt for generations. I sing the lullabyes and silly songs he sang to me, to my children. His catch phrases roll of the tip of my tongue before I even think of it. His love for music and books will live on and on in our family.

Poppa was plagued with health problems most of his adult life. He had to cut his geneological mission with Nanny short because of the progression of the Alzhiemer's, but willing served while he could.

I am not sad he is not trapped in a body that was slowly ebbing away, but I will miss him dearly all my life. It is comforting to know that my angels will now get to benefit from his influence. I can think of no one I would trust to teach them more than him. I love you Poppa!

I'm glad you got to have such a good relationship with him. It is nice to know they aren't suffering anymore isn't it?

L.
