Subject: Godparents?

K girls, I have a question for you. A friend of mine asked my husband and I to be godparents for her child. She is a really sweet girl, single mom. I've known her about 6 months, she's not really religious. Does the church have any stand on it that you are aware of? I will ask my bishop on Sunday but I just wanted to know if you girls had any idea. I mean, I don't think we actually have to do anything, I think it's just a formality. Is there anything wrong with saying ok? Thanks for any response!!
Lauren

I'm not sure what they all are, but I would certainly check them out before I agreed. One the responsibilities I had heard about was taking a part is making sure the child learned about God, in this case, learn to be Catholic, if I'm remembering correctly. Heard it on Dr. Laura.

I'm not sure where the Church stands on this, or if it even has a stand, but I would want to know what I was agreeing to do, whether this lady takes is seriously or not, because I do know the Church says we are to honor our commitments. I also know there is an actual ritual you would have to go through, so that might present a conflict, I don't know?

My advice, check it out before you say yeah or nay. It would be an honor, though, to be considered for that.

Jenifer,
