but I suppose it could be worse, right? I worry that Junie B. is not quite age-appropriate yet -- but Alex likes her and actually does seem to understand when she's acting bratty.

Good luck with all the books for Abby! Thanks for the reminder about Encyclopedia Brown! I liked him too when I was a child -- I've been trying to find appropriate chapter books for Alex (she reads them on her own, so I can't "filter" them) and that's probably a good series to try.
