Do your kids understand about money? (m)

DH and I were talking about this the other day. Jordan really doesn't 'get it' about money, and she certainly has no idea about the value of different things. How much do your kiddos understand about money? What about allowance? I think I had read somewhere that about age 8 is when it should start, but I'd love to hear your experiences and opinions.
