Second, I think Diane has some great ideas, too. I was 11 when I got mine for the first time and my mother wasn't very well prepared for it. She recently told me that she felt my childhood was over because I was so young. It upset her more than me. I was happy because I beat my cousins who are 10 and 14 months older than me. LOL!

My mom was never one to talk to me about personal things. Especially feelings. She was invited and went to the movie we saw at school. She asked me if I had any questions and I was too shy to say anything so I said no. Actually I knew all the technical stuff but I wasn't prepared for the emotional feelings of getting your period for the first time. Like feeling like you're becoming a woman, etc.

So my advice would be to see if she has any feelings about it she'd like to talk about. Or just ask her how it makes her feel. See if she has any questions. Ask her how her friends reacted when she told them.

As far as the tampons go, I could not wear them. I tried a few times as a teenager and lost the string almost every time and panicked!!! LOL! Plus I started getting really bad cramps as a teenager and the tampons seemed to make them worse. So I've always stayed away from them. But I think Diane's right. Give her a choice. Buy both for her and let her decide. If she wants to try the tampons, tell her to let you know if she needs help or has questions about it. Reassure her that you're always there for her even when the subject is hard to talk about.

One thing that embarrassed me was when my mom insisted that I go to the drugstore and get my own pads. I went there and just walked around and around (it was a very small drugstore in a very small town where everyone knew everyone else). I was absolutely mortified and went home without them! So please, for me, don't force her to buy anything until she's ready.

OK, that's about it from me. ;-) Celebrate this wonderful time!

~Laura~
