IF I am asked for my input, I will present the hyphenation idea to her. Also, I think you may be right about letting it be the kids choice.

The eerie thing about all of this is my mother did this. She left my dad with 3 kids to be with my dad's best friend. She insisted the we call the new guy dad, so we did. Years later we reconnected with my dad and now I can't imagine my life without him. I am grateful that my mom didn't change our name and maybe this is why it is important to me.
