Subject: My sister has a similar situation (m)
In reply to: Candice 's message, "Sherri! (or anyone else who's bioligical father is not involved)" on 08:08:27 04/05/03 Sat

My older sister had a daughter with a guy she was dating, they never married. She gave her daughter this man's last name though, I think in an attempt to keep this guy involved in his daughters life.

Now her daughter and her have different last names. This poses a problem for alot of people especially the kid's friends and if they ever want to cross the border into the US.

Maybe a better solution for everyone would be to give the kids a hyphenated name. That way they could still keep the real dad's last name but also add the step-dad's name. I think it would be pretty sad to change the kid's last names. I kind of feel a name is a birthright and maybe best left for the kid's to choose like Deltim said, later in life.
