Subject: ___________ End of the road?

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I suppose it's only fitting for me to be the one to say it.

I have it from a very, very credible source that.......

............ the Xterra is being discontinued.

According to my source, (a mucky muck at Nissan USA), "It's not etched in stone yet". But the future does not look bright for our beloved X. The 2011 Xterra may be the end of the line.

Sales are way, way down. Remember last winter when I was telling you about the sales figures? I think it was January when I worked it out that on average, only one Xterra had been sold per dealership in the US. A far cry from the glory days of 1999-2001, wouldn't you say?

The price of gas didn't help. When the Xterra came out in 1999, I remember gas for just under a buck a gallon. In the ten years since, it's about triple that. Changing demographics have played a roll as well. Whatever the real reason, it's not looking good for our favorite SUV. Looks like the Xterra is nearing the end of the road.

I have been thinking about posting this for a few days, and something just happened that made me realize it was time to say something.

I just saw a TV commercial for the Nissan Rogue crossover. It said, "Hello, mountain bikes and backpacks". It showed people using a Rogue for all the activities they were, until so recently- touting the Xterra for. It showed how you could configure the Rogue for things like transporting a kayak. For me, seeing this ad was seeing the writing on the wall.

I think Nissan is going to discontinue the Xterra.

Isn't that amazing? Ten years ago they had the factory running around the clock, seven days a week, and they could not keep up with the demand. People had to wait in line to pay MSRP, no discounts. Now it's not selling well, and it looks like the Xterra is going the way of the Edsel. {Shakes head.}

Hard to believe, but there it is.

Sorry to be the bearer of sad news, and something still could happen to change their minds. But the way it looks right now, the Xterra's days are numbered.
