The first thing I would do is take off the stock "step rails" and replace them with some beefy rock sliders made by a local guy. Some guy in his garage- those are always the best.

Before the Xterra was even released to the public, as a Nissan employee I went to a pre-release training session that was a lot of fun. Nissan had set up all these nifty dirt piles for us to try out. Well....

Right there at the pre-launch training someone drove on the side of a dirt pile like they told us to- and the step rail crushed up into the body and dented it. So get rid of those things.

And replace them with something which will protect the lower sides of the body.

That's my first thought. It's a great question and you could spend the next 10 years working on the project.
