Yes, sliders are a great start as Steve already mentioned.

You have a 2003, so that stupid plastic skid plate will get ripped off the front if you offroad much. Think about a bull-bar, not a brush bar.

You can put 31's on with a little trimming on the plastic wheel flare, maybe even 32's if you crank up the torsion bars, but then you get into the whole steering wear issues (read about it).

My basic suggestion is to find a 4x4 Xterra club in your area, wheel with them and see what they've done with their trucks and what you feel you need to do to improve it. They're great right out of the box with sliders and tire upgrade.

You can move onto suspension lifts and lockers, it really depends on what kind of terrain you're into. You might find you don't need to drop that much cash into the truck to have the kind of fun you want.
