I saw a show on TV where people who seemed smarter than me said that electric cars wouldn't take off until recharging was as simple as pulling into a station, swapping out your battery for a charged one (like those propane tank stations at your grocery store) and leaving in a matter of minutes. They felt that was the linchpin in making it all happen and were making investments towards that goal.

I figure i could adapt to 100 mile ranges eventually, but the infrastructure has to be there to make it convenient. At my old job I remember one guy who had an electric 3-wheel and he had to convince the secretaries to let him run his extension cable out the front door to recharge for his ride home. Having 50 vehicles doing it at the same time seems a bit improbable.

Nissan was testing Fuel Cell Xterras in California 8 years ago at least. The thought of linear acceleration offroad (even better with low-gears) an only H20 for exhaust was really intriguing. Not sure why it never took off as an alternative.
