Subject: Wiper arm (transmission)

My daughters has a 2000 Xterra. Last night they quit working right in the middel of a lightning storm!

Anyway on looking at it this am...it looks like the motor arm came loose off the (not sure what its called). And the wipers are working again.

The problem is its just a temporary fix cause the arm can be somewhat easily dilodged. My question is two fold.
1: What exactly is broke? I am thinking the arm cap has become old and warped and lost its ability to grip.

2: Could I take it all out and fix it another way...say carter pin or something.

Thanks in advance.

Chris
