Because I happened to notice it on a Pathfinder. But that's not the point. The point is.....

Since the first digit denotes the country of origin, and there has already been a digit for "USA", namely "1", ever since they had VINs, ....

....why bother adding a new one for "USA"? What's the point? Why did someone come up with this? Why, for example, does your Xterra start with "5N...", rather than "1N..."?

I can't think of any reason, but there must have been one.
