Subject: Xterra sales plunge during December- to about 1 per dealership

This is just so weird.

______________________________________________________________________________

Q: On average, how many new Xterras were sold at each Nissan dealership in December?

A: About 1.1 That's ONE Xterra sold per dealership in December.

______________________________________________________________________________

There are a little over 1,400 Nissan dealerships in the United States. Yesterday Nissan released the sales numbers for December, and like Toyota and Honda, they are downright scary. (Down a whopping 35% across the board pretty much.) Xterra sales fell through the floor.

Xterras sold December 2007: 3,911

Xterras sold December 2008: 1,622

That's a decline in sales of new Xterras of almost 60% from last year. 60% ! That's staggering.

So how many Xterras did a dealership need to have on hand in order to stock a one month supply? One or two. That's just incredible.

Of course it's not just the Xterra, things are really, really bad all over. And to be honest, the immediate future looks even worse.

I can't help but compare this to the Glory Days when people were very happy to wait a two or three weeks and pay sticker. Back then the factory in Tennessee was going round the clock and could not keep up with the orders. We would get a truckload of 12 Xterras, and every one of them was already sold, and the people whose Xterras were not on that shipment were pissed.

Given that Frontier sales were down even more, (70%), I have to imagine that the factory is closed right now.

I don't know what it all means, but it ain't good.
