Subject: Urgent Recall Alert: 2005-09 Nissan Xterra, Pathfinder, Frontier

Nissan is recalling Xterras, Pathfinders, and Frontiers from model years 2005 through 2009 due to defective with crash zone sensors that could prevent front airbags from deploying in an accident.

According to a defect notice filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the recall specifically affects vehicles sold or registered in 20 Northern states and the District of Columbia, all of which "use heavy concentrations of road salt in the winter. A mixture of snow/water and salt can enter into the front crash zone sensor (CZS) housing. If this occurs, the CZS may internally rust, resulting in a signal interruption."

Drivers have some warning if their car's air bag system has been compromised. If the CZS signal is interrupted, a dashboard airbag warning light will illuminate - so if the airbag light in your Nissan truck or SUV is on, please contact your dealer.

Nissan dealers will replace the defective sensor with a sensor of a new design, at no charge to owners. Owners in states outside the affected area are not eligible for free sensor replacement, but Nissan has extended the warranty on the crash sensors in those states to ten years from purchase of the vehicle.

Nissan has not announced when it will begin contacting owners - but with a critical safety issue, expect notification to begin soon. Those who wish to make their own repair arrangements can contact Nissan at 1-800-647-7261.
