Subject: R.I.P: Isuzu

Welp, Isuzu just announced that they will stop selling vehicles in the U.S. The Xterra played a part in their demise. (Now that they mention it, I do recall a lot of Troopers that my customers traded in for Xterras.)

Isuzu exec: Competition hurt us

DETROIT
Financial problems in the early part of this decade and the intensely competitive U.S. automobile market led to the downfall of Isuzu's passenger vehicle business in North America, a top executive said Thursday.

Isuzu Motors Ltd., famous for developing one of the first midsize sport utility vehicles and an ad campaign that featured a salesman telling lies, announced Wednesday that it will stop selling new pickups and SUVs in North America on Jan. 31, 2009.

The Japanese company had financial problems and restructured to become profitable again earlier this decade, but in doing so had to reduce investments and expenses, said Terry Maloney, president and chief operating officer of Isuzu Motors America Inc.

"From that point it was trying to find a commercially viable product," Maloney said in a telephone interview.

Isuzu has a contract with General Motors Corp. to produce the Ascender sport utility vehicle and i-290 and i-370 pickup trucks, but that contract will end, Maloney said.

"We were not able to reach agreement with GM, nor could we obtain any other viable products for the market," he said.

He would not say when GM will stop producing the vehicles. The Ascender is a midsize SUV similar to a Chevrolet TrailBlazer, while the two pickups are similar to the midsize Chevrolet Colorado.

Isuzu's U.S. sales peaked in 1986 at 123,000 vehicles, mainly on sales of the Trooper SUV, but the company sold only 7,098 pickups and SUVs in 2007.

Maloney said increasing competition in the U.S., especially in the midsize SUV market, also played a role in Isuzu's decision.
