Most SUV's never go offroad, so yes, they're a pretty poor commuter vehicle unless you have all the seats full of passengers. A Suburban with 7 people is more efficient than one person in a Hybrid.

I use my Xterra to get outdoors mostly. A weekend camping and offroading with my family costs about $50 in gas and $50 in food and beer. Compare that to the cost of taking the family to the movies, or dinner out and it's still a good bargain. Makes better memories too.

The rest of the time it sits in the garage or maybe gets some groceries. The Subaru does the city and long distance driving.
