Praying for Revenge
7 April 2003
Abdul Aziz Al-Dakheel/Al-Eqtisadiah
ARAB NEWS

The Minister of Islamic Affairs, Sheikh Saleh Al-Sheikh, instructed the imams all over the Kingdom who lead congregational prayers to offer “qunoot” prayers for the welfare and protection of Muslims. The decision followed a fatwa issued by the Kingdom’s Grand Mufti, Sheikh Abdul Aziz Al-Sheikh, citing “the great calamity that has befallen Muslims in Iraq and the mass killing of innocent women, children and the elderly.”

Offering “qunoot” prayers is a tradition with its roots in the time of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). However, listening to some imams offering “qunoot” prayers, one gets the impression that they are seeking revenge instead of the welfare of their fellow Muslims. Islam is not a religion which seeks revenge on those who do not follow it. Rather, it guides and directs people to the right path.

Some “qunoot” prayers only harm us even if they are directed at the enemy. One imam prays for the death of the enemy, for their children to become orphans and their wives to become widows. Another prays for the enemy’s blood to freeze in the veins so they will wish they were dead rather than suffer so terribly.

Turning the enemy’s children into orphans and their wives into widows has nothing to do with the Islamic code of fighting. This is not what the Holy Qur’an and Sunnah teach. Killing an enemy is only intended to do away with aggression and the harm resulting from it. When prayers take such a turn, “qunoot” will be without its true objective. Those who pray for the economy of the enemy to suffer should realize that the economies of the Muslim world are entertwined with the economies of other nations.

Prophet Muhammad taught us that he was sent to guide and teach. Even when he suffered greatly at the hands of the infidels, he did not curse them or call for their annihilation. At one point, the angel Jibreel came to the Prophet to tell him that God had ordered him to ask the Prophet if he wanted the non-believers punished by being crushed under the mountains around Makkah. The Prophet answered that he didn’t want to see them punished in such a way, and hoped instead to see a generation of good Muslims spring from those very non-believers.

During the 1991 Gulf War, imams offered prayers cursing Saddam Hussein and members of the Baath Party — wishing and hoping to see them suffer severe punishment. I fear that these same imams have been carried away by enthusiasm and are now praying for the welfare and protection of the very individuals they were cursing only a short time ago.
