In a way well said lizzie. Naturally this is not always the viewpoint of many. It is however a tradition which many like to observe even tho they do not understand the real meaning although some do my local church is full of them and some live in council houses. I think it is unfair to tar everyone with the same brush, with respect to council houses and the unemployed or outdoing thy neigbour. Some in council houses or any other enjoy this tradition, many have bought their council houses and how they spend their pensions is their affair. I know of at least one pensioner who decorates his house every year and who lives alone but loves to see the children's faces as they stop to view, it gives him great pleasure. It is a tradition which has been observed universally not just in the UK. It was also observed in the trenches in world war one and signifies the season of peace and goodwill.
