- Hillcrest House in Abertillery -- Bill Williams, 15:36:50 01/16/07 Tue
I believe I posted a message 1-2 years ago regarding a House in Abertillery named Hill Crest. But can not find the e-mail. I have just come in to a picture of the house in about 1920's. My Prosser family lived in the home. Is the house still standing? I would love a photo of what it looks like now. I will e-mail photo to anyone who wants to see it.
Thank you,
Bill Williams

- Six Bells -- Marion Lambert, 13:51:27 09/23/07 Sun
Re the origin of the name Six Bells. This old pit village grew up around the Six Bells pub and was named after it, as were several other places, e.g Cross Keys and Holly Bush. See Roy Palmer's "The Folklore of (old) Monmouthshire" published by Logaston Press 1998.
Incidentally, the old railway signal box near Six Bells Halt had the name Cwmnantygroes which was easily seen from Griffin Street, Six Bells.
I used to live in Arrail Street and when we ordered groceries from Mrs. Blacker's greengrocer's shop in Six Bells during the War (WW2),she used to mark it for Mrs. Jenkins "down The Fields" - obviously a memory from before the pits were sunk.

- A Mystery -- Catweazle, 10:14:22 12/28/05 Wed
Hello Abertilleri and hope you had a very Merry Christmas, and an even better new year.I wonder if any of your patrons can solve a mystery(to me anyway)for me. I recently downloaded the free version of google earth(hours of fun here looking at your districts, although the images are at least three or four years old).Scanning some of the mountains around Abertilleri, i came across some strange earthworks or excavations, they were on top of the mountain between Aber and the end of the new cwm bypass.Anything been going on up there in the last few years?.They look Archaeological to me, but they could be the remains of old buildings i suppose.Anyway, thanks for any help in advance, and download google earth, great fun, especially when you use the angle viewer over the valleys, it's like a three D image. Cheers.

Hello David,
Just a note to let you know I for one being an ex-pat would hate to see you give up the website, especially after all the hard work you've have put into it.
I can only say being an ex Aber boy, that I wouldn't be the only one who would miss it. As you know there are a few of us all over the world who visit the site on a regular basis, so I can only say, not only for myself, but also for those who regularly visit, it would be shame not to see Old Aber on the WWW, and you not running it.

G'day David (Mr Webmaster Sir)
A question that perhaps users of this site might like to ask regarding taking over the site?
Just how much does it cost to run the site?
I know people like Carolyn and Kath would be available to assist, as they now do, in the running of the site but what would it cost to finance this?

- Genealogy Help ... Again! -- Charmaine, 09:41:12 02/25/06 Sat
As some readers may recall, for several years now I have been trying to piece together my family tree. The surnames Price, Jones, Cecil and Summers being my focal searching points.
I shan't bore everyone with the confusions enroute, suffice perhaps to say that more unusual names would have been appreciated!
My latest dilemma is that the only marriage I(and other kind people) can find between a John Price and Adeline Jones (my paternal Grandparents) is one that took place after their earlier children were born. However (and I admit, to my suprise)I am told that this was not unusual. With that in mind I ordered the said Marriage Certificate, which arrived this morning, but I remain 'unconvinced'that this is actually the John and Adeline I'm seeking.
Therefore am putting the details on here and the Brynmawr site in case any names are of interest to or 'ring bells' for anyone else.
The details on the Certificate are:
Date: Twenty Ninth October 1894.
John Price, aged 30 years, Bachelor. Blacksmith.
Staffordshire Row, Abertillery.
Father, William Price. Profession: Sawyer.
Adeline Jones, aged 23 years, Spinster.
Blaina Gwent.
Father, Edward Jones. Coal Miner.
In presence of:
Margaret Smedley. John Richard Lewis. Mary-Jane and Fred Henry.
Given ages are out by, John 2yrs and Adeline 4yrs.
John being listed as a Bachelor, as opposed to Widower/Divorcee does not tally with all I've heard and read.
The Blacksmith bit is perhaps the only certainty and the name Mary-Jane's starting to haunt me! (Was name of John's child with first wife Maria. I'm told Mary-Jane married a Mr Wheeler).
Again, I thank those who've helped me for all their support.
With many thanks for your time,
Charmaine.

- Family History -- Lizzie, 23:58:33 11/29/05 Tue
It could be a good idea to post matters relating to family history on a separate section?
I find that they are either not sincerely read or left with no answers.
These issues need to be attended by those who have a particular interest or those who wish to investigate this line of inquiery.
I say this from experience of a father who has donated his time to Family -History and how time consuming it can be -yet with people of expertice and interest it becomes second nature to find results.I have asked a question about ancestory - yet to be lost with enthusiastic comments of daily life and routines- which are wonderful and keep the site alert so maybe the time has come to create another section to the forum of which Family History could play an important part ?

In my opinion a Whinberry Tart is heaven on earth, but not had any for a long time!! I wonder if people in Aber still go Whinberry picking. In my d+ay whenever I went, there would more often than not, be several others somewhere on the mountain olso picking. (NT) -- Ray Dix, 22:36:49 11/06/05 Sun

- Proposed Development At Tirpentwys Cut, Pantygasseg -- Kathryn Fowler, 16:24:03 06/28/06 Wed
A planning application has been submitted to Torfaen County Borough Council by Peakman Ltd. They want to sell aggregate from the Torfaen end of the "canyon" at Pantygasseg. The rock will be processed by 3 giant crushing machines and will work from 7am to 7pm Mon to Fri and 7am to 1pm on Saturdays. 100 lorries per day will leave the site and travel across Mynydd Llanhilleth to near Pantygasseg old school where a new road will be built to join the Hafodyrynys Rd. The work will take at least 20 years to complete and will only create 12 jobs. If the scheme is successful Peakman Ltd will apply to do further work at the Blaenau Gwent end of the site. The area is a wildlife haven and Gwent Wildlife Trust say the canyon is a potential nesting site for peregrines. The work would devastate the area causing light pollution, water pollution and air pollution. Please send letters of objection asap to Neil Boardman, Planning Officer, Torfaen County Borough Council, County Hall, Cwmbran, NP44 2WN, email neil.boardman@torfaen.gov.uk quoting reference 03/P/09336

Hello. Does anyone still living in the Abertillery area have my grandfather in their family 'tree'?
John Smith, born Old Row, Cwmtillery, 1871.
He spent his final years with his daughter, Maria Coles, in Alma Street, Abertillery and died there in 1942. He had a number of half-brothers and sisters called Partridge - one was Joseph Partridge who kept a local shop. He also had a number of Smith half-brothers and sisters - one, Arthur Emanuel Smith, kept a shop in Blackwood. I would like to learn more about my grandfather's early life after his mother died. I believe he spent some years in America. If anyone has any information then I will be very pleased to hear from them.

I tried to email the familyhistory email box on the abertillery.net site, but it was full, so here goes.
I am coming to Wales for a few days in the beginning of September 06 and am hoping to learn more about my grandfather and maybe meet any family members. Here is all the information I have. My grandfather's name was William Edgar Lawrence Ward. He was born November 5, 1908. He came to America April 6, 1925. His father's name is unknown. His mother was Agnes. We are unsure of her maiden name. It might be George or Ledbetter. She was born February 15, 1884 in Sinderford England. I believe she had 9 siblings that remained in Wales or England. If anyone knows of this family or is part of this family I'd love more information or would like to meet in September.
Thanks.

- Family History - JAMES -- John James, 21:14:15 06/26/06 Mon
I am researching my family history which appears to have been largely based around the Llanhilleth and Cwmtillery areas.
My late father's name was Ronald Leslie James and he was born in December 1905. I believe that the place of his birth was Llanhilleth. His father was Phillip James and I think that his mother was Elizabeth. They lived at 19 Hyde Place, Llanhilleth, certainly between 1919 and 1953 when Phillip James died. Elizabeth was involved in a mining accident and was left blind. My father worked in Llanhilleth Colliery at the time of his thirteenth birthday (1918). He married my mother Amy May Cooper in the Commercial Road Baptist Church, Llanhilleth on the day that the second World War broke out, the 2nd September 1939.
I am led to believe that my mother, Amy May Cooper, was born in Cwmtillery in December 1910 but subsequently moved to Bath. Her father's name was Robert Cooper and I think that her mother was also called Elizabeth.
I would be most grateful if anyone can add any further details regarding this family.

- Hughes family 1700's early 1800 -- Don Hughes, 20:00:31 05/13/06 Sat
I have been searching my Hughes line which I only recently found in a church note for William Hughes' wedding ...that he (would be my ggggrandfather) came out of Abertillery.
What I know is that William Hughes married Mary Phillips (born 1811) of CWM on Sept`8, 1828 at St Peters, Bliana, by banns. Records say that he was from Abertillery. She was the daughter of Thomas Phillips born 1787 and Mary Phillips born 1791.
William Hughes and Mary Phillips had Thomas, Ebenezer Born about 1835-6, Ann and Sarah. Ebenezer who married Elizabeth Morgan of Ebbw Vale is my great grandfather who came to the US about 1858.
Is there any home of finding the HUGHES LINE in Abertillery..I'm assuming that William was born 1810 ish...?
Thanks..

We are originally an Abertillery family and visit your site often to see what's going on in our old family home. We still have family in Cwmtillery/Abertillery. We were wondering if we could ask of you if you would be kind enough to sponsor our younger daughter Laura in an organised Charity Abseil which takes place on Saturday morning 13th May. Laura has chosen to participate in this abseil donating all the proceeds to Cancer - you may either have family or friends who have been touched by this awful illness, and any amount however small will be gratefully appreciated. Laura will be abseiling down a 230 foot building at Canary Wharf in London (rather her than me !!) she has only ever done this once before and that was over a small cliff in Wales with the school !! and we were not there to witness that (thank goodness). I (her mum) will be taking photographs and her dad has promised to film her (with his eyes tightly shut) - I shall, if possible, get any photographs that are not blurred by camera shake into the site for you all to see. Here is a link direct to a safe secure site which you can make donations to via a debit or credit card www.justgiving.com/lauraharrhy - thanking you in antipation, Keri and Dawson Harrhy

Hello all again,
I am currently researching my Great grandfathers' family even thought im told not to waste chasing joneses in Wales!
I have recently got the marraige details of Sidney Edgar Harris Jones marrying a Elisabeth Hickey. This has led me to discovering both their parents names. Although they married a little further up the valley, they lived in glyndwr Street, Abertillery. Sidney was apparenlty a foreman in the tin works. The Jones family also extended out to the Gaen Street region also.
If this rings a bell with you or you have a little more details regarding the tinworks, other than just its location such as photos or employment records(i wish lol) please reply!
Regards,
Exiled Carl.

I'm really enjoying reading all the messages on your site. I feel I am learning a lot about your town.
During WWII, while my uncle, Russell Wilson of the US Army, was in Wales, he met Harold Bartlett. He told my uncle that he was related to our Bartlett family from your general area. Elizabeth Bartlett (born 1854 in Abersychan), father: John Bartlett, (Trevethin) mother: Mary Ann James (Nanty-glo)
married John Roberts (Herfordshire). Harold gave his address as: 28 Brookside Row, Abertillery.
Does any of this information mean anything to anyone? Is the Bartlett family still in Abertillery?

First I'd like to say that I think the site is great and I would like to say thanks to those who replied to my previous message for info on Fred Sheen.
It occured to me that there also might be info on John Paget. He was born in Coleford (I believe) and his son Wilfred was certainly born in Coleford, Kilmersdon Somerset. He came to Abertillery (I believe) after 1904 (the year my father was born in Coleford) and died before 1914. He was baptized Henry John but when he married Harriett Russell in Bristol in 1901 he was John Henry. When he died Harriett, now Paget married Fred Sheen.
I cannot find any account of his death but definately believe he died in Abertillery or nearby. It would be wonderful to receive any info anyone can give.
Thanks

- Maida LEWIS? b.1909 lived Richmond Rd in 1930s ?adopted? -- Helen, 12:02:20 02/06/06 Mon
I am trying to find details/trace relatives of my paternal grandmother known as Maida LEWIS - though she may have been adopted/illegitmate so her birth surname may be different (no birth record exists under this name)born 13 Mar 1909 (this is the DOB she used but if adopted that may not be correct either)
In 1930 Maida married Thomas GLASENBURY (son of Charles and Edith, with a sister called Vera - also from Richmond Rd, Abertillery - a furnishers assistant).
Maida's father (according to her marr cert) was called George and at the time of her marriage was a laundry van driver. Maida was living at 128 Richmond Road, Six Bells, Abertillery. One of the winesses at her marriage was a Hilda LEWIS; the others Tudor DAVIES and Millicent PETERSON (these may be friends or family).
Maida and Thomas lived in Miskin St, Cardiff for a while and then Abertillery again (possibly nursing her dying father during the war - they had a son and daughter) before finally moving to London around 1946. When she moved two of her friends (+ families?) went too - Winnie PEAKE and Emily/Emma something who had a daughter Joyce.
ANY information would be appreciated (we are expecting there to be something unusual about her birth so please don't worry whatever the details may be).
Many thanks.

- Abertillery Online website; statement -- David - webmaster, 16:49:27 02/01/06 Wed
First may I apologise to all for the lack of updates on here of late and also for the lack of answers to the thread below started by Mike in Australia. My personal apologies to you Mike for not having answered your original question.
OK - some answers to inform you all of the true sitaution and corrections to some inadvertent misinformation in the above thread in answers by others.
1) My intention has always been to run this site to create/maintain interest in my home town of Abertillery which is why I started it back in 1999. My firmly held belief is that the town and its community needs a presence on the net to promote and them.
2) I have been/was/am ambitious in trying to make it as interesting and useful to the widest scetion of vistors with sections that appeal to all from pictures (past and present), history, Tyleri Tales, picture and other quizzes etc, through to services for offer and current news. I will leave others to judge its sucess or otherwise. With regard to news I have been lucky in that Carolyn supplied me with information that I was able to load and with regard to pictures many people have been kind enough to offer fantastic images. In addition, I believe the message board has been successful in generating interest and debate, another key feature.
3) I live in Cardiff, not Abertillery, have a young family and work full time as a research scientist, which means my leisure time is limited with what I can do with the site. The major reason for the "suspension" of the main site is that that work has taken more and more of my time. I had hoped that I would be moving into a position where this site could be developed on a more full time basis from my point of view (I cannot say too much on that in case my boss is reading this! ;-)) However, sadly it is now the case that that opportunity has gone at least for the forseeable future.
4) I hope to keep the main site running in some form. The situation is not down to money as I pay the fees needed to register the site and its hosting out of my own pocket as my hobby and "contribution" to the town. The problem is time and effort required as I have said above. I am very willing to pass the running of the site to others in its entirety - I think it would make a great community adventure and project, but be warned it takes time to do it properly. The fees are not that extortionate and no-one has to pay me personally contrary to the suggestion in the thread below. The message board as the same person said is hosted free anyway.
I will await any responses with interest. I don't see it as "my" site but rather it belongs to everyone who cares about Abertillery and the surrounding community.
Best wishes
David

- FROM THE BBC -- FROM THE BBC WEBSITE, 14:39:43 01/31/06 Tue
New stations in £155m rail plans
The strategy looks at improving existing services and increasing use
A £155m rail investment programme has been recommended to ease congestion on the south Wales and the valleys lines.
The proposals include up to 10 new stations, new trains and extra services over a 10-year period from 2009.
A consultants' report was backed by 10 local council representatives on Sewta (the South East Wales Transport Alliance).
It is expected to go to the Welsh Assembly Government for further consideration.
Jacobs Consultancy said that if demand for rail services continues at the current rate, new investment, especially for commuters from the south Wales valleys, will be needed.
Reliability
The new report is looking beyond the current five-year strategy, which includes a new passenger service between Ebbw Vale and Newport and new stations for Llanharan, Energlyn and Brackla.
The report points out that passengers are already experiencing problems on Arriva services in the Valleys, especially with reliability and getting a seat.
It is suggested that extra services and longer trains will be needed if demand continues to rise.
Proposals include:
More frequent services for the Rhymney Valley, Taff Vale, new Ebbw Vale to Newport line, Abergavenny and Chepstow, and the Vale of Glamorgan
More frequent and longer trains for peak times
Five new stations at Caerleon, Magor, Llanwern, Coedkernew and St Mellons
Look at possible line extensions to Ebbw Vale Town and from Pontyclun to Beddau with new stations including Talbot Green and Llantrisant.
Bus links from stations to more remote communities
The Rail Passengers' Council Wales represents the interests of rail users and its director Clive Williams said the recommended investment was "excellent news" and "long overdue".
"There has been a 30% increase in patronage on the Valleys Line and this is very much in line with the recommendations," said Mr Williams.
He added that he wanted to see the programme implemented as rapidly as possible and said it followed the Welsh Assembly Government's commitment to sustainable transport.
The study looks towards EU Objective One money for reducing the capital cost, private finance partnerships for some stations, as well as increasing the rail subsidy of between £2m-£7m a year.
Sewta's board said it had agreed to "commission further technical, economic, demand and specific development work in preparation for its implementation".

Hello people .First let me say that I am not from your town and that I am only half welsh by birth .My mother was welsh she was called Elizabeth Teleri Thomas and was born in Cwm Trch Islaf near the Black Mountains. I lived there for a while as a boy as my parents split up for a while .I was born myself in the centre of London and so am a cockney by birth but I look to my welsh family for my roots .My grandfather was a miner and the village healer .He was also a druid bard and told my father that the name Teleri was a clan name .I do not know anymore about it and so would ask your help in knowing more .
My partner bought me a book about Abertillery thinking that it was the same name .Is it ?.She wants to bring me there to visit my history but I told her that I have not been to Abertillery and that Cwm Trch is a way away from there .
I would like to learn more about the clan Teleri from someone .And how if it is the same name as Tillery my family got to the Cwm to live .
As another matter of interest I am wanting to get to know anyone who plays the Crewth and or the welsh bagpipes and the celtic overtone flute as my grandfather did .
I would be interested in a music project with them also .I play the native american flute and celtic flute and have been pursuing my journey for 6 years now ,my sister lives in Machylleth and i live in northampton england right now but I could visit .
Thank you people
blessings

- Road Transport Museum for the Valley´s -- David Griffiths, 12:24:26 12/13/05 Tue
Ambitious plans to establish a Road Transport Museum in the South Wales Valley´s were launched 12 months ago by the fledgling Rhymney Valley Transport Preservation Society. Regretably, so far a suitable site had not been identified and this is causing problems for the growing collection of buses and lorries with South Wales links.
At the moment we need to find covered accomodation for several vehicles to allow restoration to proceed and also outside secure accomodation for up to 30 vehicles of various sizes.
We would welcome contact with anyone in Abertillery who can assist us or who has interesting items that could be donated or loaned relative to transport in Abertillery.
We have our own website which is undergoing a makeover and this can be accessed at www.welsh-transport-prreservation.co.uk or www.freewebs.com/rhymneyheritage or you can email us at rhymney-valley-tps@fsmail.net

MISSING GIRL ABERTILLERY – APPEAL
jm7542005 - Published: 12/12/05
Police are appealing for information regarding the whereabouts of 16-year-old Karly Adams who hasn’t been seen since Thursday December 1, 2005.
She left her family home in Abertillery at approximately 4.00pm and she has since failed to return.
She is described as about 5’7” tall, of a slim build, with blue/green eyes and mousey brown shoulder length hair tied back in a ponytail. When she left home she was wearing a purple coat with a white fir collar and cuffs, a red top with a lace panel on the front, jeans and white Nike trainers with a red tick.
It’s believed she could be in the Newport area, particularly Duffryn, where she has contacts.
Anyone who has seen Karly or someone matching her description is asked to call Gwent police on 01633 838111.

- Has BGCBC lost the plot!!!! -- Amazed, 15:35:01 12/04/05 Sun
The regeneration plans for Abertillery include the erection of a picnic patio over the river behind the library in front of the back of the old Bush Hotel. Is this part of their new vision for Blaenau Gwent. Nice shady spot surrounded by trees, overlooking the river, panoramic views of???? and litter. Captures the great beauty of our natural environment and the wealth of wildlife, gnats and rats with the unique aroma of the river stinky.
Nice bit of decking, however wasted on the "hoodies, druggies and alkies" who will undoubtedly frequent this area the most out of site of the CCTV.

- Welsh boy rocks with Son of Dork -- Welsh boy rocks with Son of Dork, 10:19:37 12/09/05 Fri
Welsh boy rocks with Son of Dork
The band, Son of Dork, hit the charts at number three with their debut single Ticket Outta Loserville and Welsh guitarist is loving every minute of it.
David Williams, 19, from Abertillery in Blaenau Gwent, was picked by former boy band Busted member James Bourne for the role.
Williams has already hit the headlines after being romantically linked with rocker Kelly Osbourne.
But he dismissed stories of a relationship as "just hype".
The five-piece rock band have already captured the hearts of thousands of teenage girls, many of them former Busted fans.
"It's awesome, totally insane," he said.
"I can't believe it, one minute we were in the studio making the album and the next thing we are on CD:UK with loads of screaming fans.
"It is pretty cool and the fans are really cool too, although some are really insane.
But he admitted the band is still in its early days.
"It is quite scary how big Busted were - we have got some big shoes to fill," he said.
So is there any truth in the rumours that he is dating Kelly Osbourne, daughter of Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne?
"Apparently I broke up with her today according to the papers - I just wish I was that high profile," he said.
"We are just friends - I've met her three times.
"We met in the Smash Hits party, she and Jack her brother were sitting near us but I didn't speak to her anymore than any of the other boys.
"She is a cool girl - a really nice girl, we've talked about it and she just thinks it's really funny.
"I mean it is totally surreal - she's Ozzy Osbourne's daughter!"
Williams was among hundreds who auditioned for the band whose second single is due out next month.
"My friend started seeing this girl who knows James (Bourne) and she heard that he was setting up a band, and I was thinking - I can do that," he explained.
"So I met him and hung with him and we got close and then I went to the auditions and I think they picked me because I was the loudest."
He moved from south Wales to London immediately.
Mobbed
"I used to spend a lot of time in Cardiff and Newport when I was living at home, so living in London is really suiting me, although I am looking forward to coming home for Christmas," he said.
"Last time I was home, I walked though town and there were about eight girls who recognised me.
"I went to Tesco and someone asked me for my autograph and then all these other people were there and the staff - it was weird, I was being mobbed in Tesco."
Williams said he would love to come back to Cardiff.
"I'd really like to play at Coopers Field because I remember seeing Green Day playing there in 2002 and it was awesome."

- THE STATE OF WELSH RUGBY! -- William, 13:26:10 11/22/05 Tue
What is it with the Welsh Rugby fans and the way they seem to be happy with their teams performance whatever the outcome? I mean the result against the All Blacks "crushing defeat" people said "well we expected it, at least we tried our best" Then they scraped a win by 1 point over the weak Fijians, and the reason was they are not gelling yet! Last week the South Africans, again the excuses flowed along with never ending praise and support for a gallant effort.
This thing about a learning curve cropped up and I thought this learning curve is more like a time loop! Ground Hog Day even.
Does anyone think that it could be the fans fault for the teams lack of passion on the day? As with 90% of them the rugby is secondary to a booze filled day out! Put it this way, Our ruby team is a professional outfit, getting payed to do a job, the same as any other world class player, yet the fan base tolerate and accept bad performances.
If you payed say a builder to do a job and he messed up would you say "ah but he tried hard love him" I don`t think so! you would demand your money back and it would make him try harder next time.
Or are the players in a feel safe situation however they perform? It`s been proven it`s not management, take a look at Henry and Hanson, If the fans showed more interest in performances by praising good and boo-ing bad and calling a spade a spade maybe it will put some fire into the players hearts.
There`s no reason why we should keep on accepting failure
What do other people think?

- Searching for Prices, Abertillery -- Helen Riley, 09:36:54 11/23/05 Wed
I am searching for my grandfather's family who, according to the 1901 census and his birth certificate came from Abertillery.
His parents were Joseph Price (born ca1876 in Abertillery) and Sarah (nee Williams or Jones?, born ca 1978 in Nantyglo) and they lived in the underhouses in Princess Street (number 44?) and were still there on my grandfather's birth in 1909.
In 1901 census they have one child, Clifford L (possibly Lewis) aged 10 months.
They went on to have 8 more children, Thomas, Phyllis, Clarice, Leslie, Albert, Lena, Olive and Nancy.
However the family broke up, Clifford and Thomas left the area, Phyllis and Clarice went into service and Leslie, Albert and Lena ended up at the Cottage Homes in Tredegar.
As the family did not stay together, I have little information to go on, so would appreciate any information on this family.
Many thanks

Obviously it is just a rumour at the moment... but if it turns out that defeated parliamentary Labour candidate Maggie Jones is given a peerage in the New Year's honours list it really must rank as a new low for the Labout party.
What sort of message does this send out to the electorate? 'Don't bother to try and vote us out because we will just slip 'em in through the back door anyway.' Cynicism beyond belief. I'd have been surprised at this sort of thing from the Tories even.
If it turns out to be true is says a lot for her character that she would agree to be rewarded in this way. I know I'd have a bit more pride in defeat than to accept this sort of nepotism.
Hopefully it turns out to be just a rumour.

I recently visited the town and looked up a few addresses - however - the address on my Grandfathers birth certificate is Victoria Terrace, Abertillery, the only Victoria Terrace we could find was in Brynithel. I am not sure if this is the correct Terrace. Was there another Victoria Terrace actually in Abertillery in 1912, that maybe has since been demolished? Oh and also is there a WWII memorial in the town?
Thankyou for any help on this. I am planning another visit and want to have as much information before hand.

Hi
I wonder if you could help me. I am looking for some information on my grandparents who came from Abertillery. I was told that they had a shop there in the 1920's but it had to close during the 1926 strike.
I also believe that they had some relations killed in the Six Bells mining disaster as I can remember my grandfather having to go back to identify the remains.
My grandfather was called William Vincent? Mayberry and his wife was Violet Stollard or Stoddard. They had two children while in Abertillery Arthur Mayberry and Nora Mayberry(my mother) and moved to Askern near Doncaster in Yorkshire.
I would like to hear from any remaining relations or people who can remember them or help with my searches.
Many thanks

- Looking for -- Sheen, 14:06:54 07/25/05 Mon
Hello
I have been trying to trace the birth, death and other info of my stepfather Mr F Sheen. He and his wife Harriett lived at 82 Princess Street from about 1910 or so and definately until her death in 1953. My stepgrandfather was the Blacksmith and always talked of how he shoed all the horses but later resorted to making the wrought iron railings in Abertillery and around when the horses went. I visited Abertillery a couple of times in my childhood and was taken to visit relatives over the mountain. I am not sure whether Fred* Sheen was from the area originally or not. They had one child, Freddie, who as an adult married and lived in Newport. He was married to Clarence. Harriett was formely married to John Paget.
I wonder if there are any relatives who know of Freds birth and death dates. Its possible he died around 1965-70. I would also love to know the whereabouts of the Smithy and when it closed. Fred was a keen bowler and used to go on tour each year to Brighton etc but I'm not sure which team it was for.
I imagine the houses with outside loos were pulled down and replaced, is this so and if so when did this happen?
I hope something rings a bell with someone. I will revisit Abertillery but would like a little more info first. I Believe both Harriett and Fred were buried in the local churchyard.
Hoping to hear something.
Margaret

- Donald McCulloch c. 1929 -- Marie, 18:04:04 10/22/05 Sat
I am trying to find more information about Donald McCulloch's siblings and also their father Andrew McCulloch. I have the following rather scant information:
Andrew was a Railway Yard Foreman in Abergavenny. He lived in various accommodation in Abergavenny, with his wife Clara (nee Hancocks). They had 12 children and all were baptised in St. Mary's Church in Abergavenny. The 11th child was Donald McCulloch who lived at 101 Princess St., Abertillery in 1929. Donald's wife was called Ceridwen. I do not know if they had children. I am led to believe that Andrew was a lay preacher - possibly a Baptist. This would not appear to tie with the fact that his children were all baptised in St. Mary's. I am assured that he was a very devout Christian. As a small child, my mother recalled visiting relatives who lived in the Abertillery area. She recalled climbing a long hill to the relatives' house and believed that they either had a flower shop or that they grew flowers!(c. 1927)
Would any of the above jog anyone's memory to help me in my quest to know more about the McCulloch side of my family?
Clara McCulloch (Andrew's wife) died in Weston-s-Mare in 1929. I believe I may have found when Andrew died, but until the certificate arrives I am not certain. If correct his death was registered in Bedwellty in the June quarter of 1915.
I await responses to this message with great anticipation!

The above as far as I know was wound up last year. I see in today's Western Mail that a day nursery in Cwmcelyn, Blaina is seeking staff and that company involved involved is run by the Ebbw Vale Development Trust and the Tredegar Development Trust supported by Blaenau Gwent Council. My question/point is is there any such trust now batting as it were for Abertillery and the Ebbw Fach valley since the demise of the Ebbw Fach Development Trust. If not, why not? Whilst on this occasion, the two trusts above involved seem to be aiding the Blaina area, I would assume by the titles that they stand up for the interests of Ebbw Vale and Tredegar. Are Abertillery, Llanhilleth and the Ebbw Fach valleys once again losing out?

I work at the local Council in Cowra, New South Wales Australia. Corporal Robert Charles Carter No 1029571 243 Squadron RAF is buried in our War Cemetery. He died in a motorcycle accident 2/12/1946. He was son of Robert Charles and Ellen Ann Carter of Abertillery Monmouthsire. I am wondering if there are any relatives in your area as we would like to contact them.

- I have ties here? -- Lizzie, 23:27:32 09/14/05 Wed
After being a citizen of this town for 30 years, I recently find that a my great Aunt was married to a Six Bells inhabitant. I wonder if there are any descendants of Jack Lewis from Cwm cottage Road still around. He married my Grandma's youngest sister Jane Hughes from West Wales.
I remember their love for the motorbike they had, but never realised until really recently that Jack came from here. If anyone knows anything of his family would love to hear from you.
In one of my relatives album there is a picture of a beautiful band stand in Abertillery park - really impressive.Maybe someone here remembers their family ties to a West wales farming family a long time ago.
Lizzie

- Farquhars in Abertillery -- Rexie Akwei, 12:31:54 09/10/05 Sat
I have found Abertillery Online very interesting and what a wonderful collection of photos & memories...
This is a long shot, but I am interested in information on Ronald Arthur Farquhar b. 2 Oct 1913 in Abertillery
(married 19 Aug 1945 Birmingham & died abt 1984 Plymouth). [My brother-in-law's grandfather].
His father was: Arthur Hervey Farquhar, a baker, b. abt 1874 Abergavenny (married abt 1897 Crickhowell).
His mother was Alice Maud Pitman, a dressmaker, b. 22 April 1876 Crickhowell (died 27 Feb 1942 Abertillery)
His brother was Kenneth Campbell Farquhar, b. abt. 1899 Abertillery
Alice Maud Pitman's father was Charles Pitman, a baker & confectioner, b. abt 1840 Abergavenny (married abt 1869 Abergavenny & died after 1901)
Her mother was Mary Jones b. abt 1844 Bridgewater, Somerset & died abt 1896
Because of the dates, I imagine Ronald & Kenneth were born and lived in Abertillery with their parents, I would be glad of any information to do with the family or The Pitmans.
I wonder if you might know of the family or know someone who might?
Thanks
Rexie Akwei

- Any gardeners out there? -- Jenny, 12:25:19 08/16/05 Tue
Hi
I have two window sills that are in direct sunlight most of the day and don't know what sort of things to put in window boxes, I have painted outside on my little patio as I don't have a garden and want to 'pretty' it up and don't know what sort of things that like sunlight, the thing is it can get really hot as it is a sun trap, I tried flowers in pots years ago but they just give up in the heat.
Any ideas?
Kate
