It is said that confession is good for the soul, so I confess I was one of seven kids who was responsible for the fire. The year was about 1949, the bus was most emphatically a Jones bus and was of a petrol variety as opposed to the later type diesels, and was started about eight o’ clock in the evening. The fire although accidental was started by child stupidity. There was petrol running from a leak somewhere in the bus fuel system and it proved a wonderful opportunity to impress the girls with our ability to immerse our fingers in the petrol and then set fire to them ( the fingers that is) without feeling any pain. This truly is the stuff of real heroes. I am unable to name the streets etc because it’s a long time ago, and I have not lived in Aber for a good many years all I can recall is that it was at the rear of the Stute adjacent to a steep hill,
but as always someone drops a booby, and one of us (no names) who had previously stood in the petrol, somehow managed to ignite his petrol soaked boot. The flames leapt up his leg and consequently in his panic he stepped in the leaking petrol stream and that proved the buses’ demise
We were apprehended by the Police about two days later, frightened to death by talk of a period in a Borstal and were consequently given a severe warning and sent home.
Later I committed myself to self imposed exile in Australia; however I am prepared to name my fellow conspirators for the right persuasion. Just think about it, it could be your Grannie or Grancha that was one of the latent pyromaniacs of Aber’s past
