Subject: Re: Handsfree in Cars.Ok I was flippant in my first reply. I agree that using the phone while driving is, at best, distracting. However, where do we draw the line? Fine, smoking does mean that the driver takes one hand from the wheel, as does everyone when changing gear! A decent driver can do this without losing control and endangering others. If we carry on the in way the state appears intent on 'guiding' us its only a matter of time before each driver has to employ a man with a red flag to walk infront of them. Personally, I'm much more concerned by the half-wits who can't figure out what those nice flashing orange things on each corner of the vehicle are for.

Point taken Jamie. But life's like that isn't it? Very few things are black and white. we have to decide cut-off points on what is acceptable and what isn't and clearly around the margins there will be arguments. Mobile phone use seems to me to be on the wrong side of acceptable. Smoking may be too, or at least lighting up, but whether it is or not doesn't make mobile phone use OK IMHO, which I doubt you were suggesting anyway.

I agree wholeheartedly about indicating though - I would say only around half drivers bother with them these days. Dangerous and very frustrating too if you are waiting at the bottom of Swffryd hill for a car which you know is going to turn left up the hill but is being driven by someone for whom the effort to flick on the indicator is all too much!

BTW Dai, Hywel got his grades (4 As!) and is off to start his medicine course in September. Many, many thanks for your help.
