2002 was a year of hope. A hope Brian Frons would be just the right thing for the failing ABC line-up. Hope that the P&G soaps would get their act together, and a hope the Bell soaps (the last true successful soaps) would remain strong.
What happened in 2002... Fronzie is a mixed bag, I salute him for promoting a senior producer thats been at OLTL and knows its history to the EP position, as well as the hiring of Malone and Griffin. Although The Fronz is screwing things up at both ABC's CA based soaps. GH is a disaster!
Its all mafia all the time, those two overrated bafoons Guza and Pratt along with the ultimate soap hack JFP could very well get the HOSPITAL shut down! If OLTL is able to get things moving it could very well become ABC's top rated soap and remain there, leaving GH fading in the ratings.
As for PC, that garbage isn't worth my time! That show should have been canceled when Clinton was still in office!
At GL. Thankfully Rauch was shown the door and hopefully has been checked into the Shady Pines Retirement Home in Miami, Florida never to be seen or heard from again!
His replacement: John Conboy, probably GL's last chance.
Like The Fronz, I have high hopes for the Big JC, but I've been hearing rumors of a sock puppet being added to GL, this puppet will make comments to the audience from time to time. If this is true, Conboy is an idiot! And for certain GL will be off the air soon! ATWT is slip sliding away, although for as long as it doesnt slip past GL, the World will keep Turning for a bit longer.
Like it or hate it, Y&R is still # 1 and a strong # 1 in terms of the gap between them and whatever soap is # 2 in any given week. Sure the gap is striking but it still remains. Clearly Y&R is finding the formula that is attracting the most viewers. And its not done by sci-fi plots or chapter/novel formats, rather its simply a TRADITIONAL SOAP OPERA! Yes, the style and pace may not be everyones preference, but you can have other traditional soaps with a different style and pace, like Y&R's sister soap, B&B, another traditonal soap but B&B is a more glitzy and faster paced show, while slipping, still is able to remain in the Top 4 in the ratings.
What will 2003 bring?
A few cancelations? Maybe. A few soaps have contracts
up for renewal, but even the ones whos contract doesn't expire until 2008 could very easily be canceled due to cancelation clauses in these contracts.
What will bring on a cancelation?
At CBS, either a replacement for Lucy Johnson (whos rumored to be out or soon to be out) and the new head of daytime shakes things up, or the CBS owners, VIACOM look over the books and decide to dump the P&G soaps (one or both of them) because of declining ratings, or CBS simply decides not to renew a contract.
At ABC, PC is the only one in danger at least for this year, I don't know what the Fronz will do with this one. If PC remains in the basement, I suspect he'll pull the plug this year.
Although there are rumors he may shift the ABC soaps timeslots around to give PC a better timeslot, I doubt it will work, because simply you need a QUALITY SOAP to be successful. If you put trash in another timeslot, not many additional viewers will watch. NBC tried this with SUBE in their O&O stations in 1998 by making them switch SUBE to the post-DAYS timeslot, it didn't help! A shifting of the ABC line-up is risky as well to the existing shows. PC is just too much of a damaged product to risk the entire line-up for.
At NBC, I expect things to remain status quo. UNLESS Corday becomes greedy and doesn't give in to NBC's desires to pay him less for each episode. Corday had NBC over a barrell last contract renewal, but now NBC has the upperhand! Paybacks a bitch KennyBoy! LOL
If 2002 was a year of hope, 2003 may be The Year of Disappointments.
