From TV Game Shows.net

It's Meredith for a Million

The race is over. Not Jeff Probst. Not Regis. Not Dick Clark. Not Todd Newton. Not Doris Roberts. The New York Daily News is reporting ABC News correspondent and The View co-host Meredith Vieira will become the host of the syndicated Who Wants to Be a Millionaire in September.

The package was created by ABC and Buena Vista Television in order to keep Vieira at the network after she was pursued heavily by CBS to replace Bryant Gumbel as co-host of The Early Show.

Vieira, 48, who has been at both CBS News and ABC News since the mid-'80s, appeared this season on a celebrity edition of Millionaire in prime time. She will remain on The View with the new deal.

The Daily News did not list a salary estimate but insiders say the package will earn Vieira an estimated $3 million per year for both shows. Initial plans are for a week's taping of WWTBAM, as a half-hour edition, to be spread over two days.

As late as Monday, sources reported Buena Vista was reopening talks with Survivor host Probst for the WWTBAM role. Some affiliate managers were still pushing for BVT to make one last stab at signing the 70-year-old Philbin, who will remain host of the now-and-then network version of Millionaire.

In addition for the desire to keep Vieira in the fold at ABC, she draws strong personality scores from the 25-44 age audience which is the core of The View. The distributor is seeking a younger demographic from the network version for the syndicated WWTBAM.
