Hi Jay,
I know your post was quite some time ago, so I hope that you check this message board.
I too had mix-ups with my meds, however it was the doctor and receptionist who caused this. I have severe nerve pain caused by damage to my spine. Unfortunately, I had surgery that was unsuccessful in relieving pain. I've been living with this pain for over 7 years and during the last two, I was able to change doctors thinking that I finally found one that was sympathetic and compassionate. I had no idea that she was not fully aware of withdrawal and it's consequences.
I was up to 120mg of Oxy-contin, and even though I hated the agression and other side effects, it eased my pain enough to continue it. After taking it for over 9 months, I made an appointment with my doc, as usual every month, for a refill prescription. I always called early enough because of the fear of withdrawal, even though my doc said that I would NEVER go through it, because I take it for pain!!! Yeah..that's what she said. The receptionist made an appt. for me for a week and a half later. I told her no way and explained why and she did not care. I asked to speak to the doc and was told that she did not take patient calls. I asked for the doc to call me back..and was told that she does not call patients??? Odd huh. I was in a panic and did not know what to do.
One day after my last pill, the withdrawals started. Believe me Jay, I completely understand what you went through. You know it will be bad, but there is no way you can explain to someone how it feels. Unless you go through it yourself, it's impossible to describe isn't it? I too ended up in ER, where I was treated as a drug addict straight off the street. The ER nurses and doctor treated me horribly. I did get some pills to do me until my appt. with my family doc, but they did not listen to anything I tried to explain. They accused me of abusing the drugs, accused me of being an addict over and over again and even did so in front of other patients and their families in the waiting room. If I wasn't so sick, I would have died from embarrassment!!
The second time this happened, I went to visit my family doc for our monthly visit and she told me that she was concerned about my abusing the drug(??), even though the time frames for my prescription run-out were to the "T". She put me on a Fentanyl patch of 25mcg and told me that I would NOT experience any withdrawal at all. Well..she was wrong. It turns out she did not interpret the comparitive dosing chart properly. I went through withdrawal again and my husband took me to a different hospital's ER unit. This time, the attending doc was great. He saw the patch, saw my symptoms and he was disgusted that family physicians have so little understanding of opiate drug dosing. I told this doctor that I wanted to get off opiates for once and for all and he prescribed Ativan for me for the next three days. It was still hard, but I tell you, the Ativan and hot baths pulled me through (Ativan can be addictive also, so it's best to get right off it when your withdrawal symptoms start to subside). Now I only have the 25mcg patch and I'll be getting off that as soon as I can. I want nothing to do with opiate drugs because of the ignorance of family physicians, the public stigma, the humiliation etc. With the 25mcg, I'm in constant pain and I can imagine how bad it will be with 0, but it's what I have to do. I don't recommend this for you Jay, I'm just relating my experience. I know firsthand how horrible it was for you Jay. I experienced the same things and I'm sure someone has told you that you could have died. It was one of the things that the second ER doc told me. It scared me to learn as much as I could.
For those of you out there, please, please become as educated as you can about EVERYTHING to do with your meds. It may save your life.
Warmly and with compassion to all,
Lee
