want a kick in the head?
a tree fell on my truck on June 1st when those tornado-like storms ripped through the DFW. i was on the 4th Floor trying to get our pts out of their rooms and into the hallways because a tornado was spotted not far away from the hospital. it was just a shitty, shitty night. the electricity was sputtering, we'd have 10-15 intermittent periods of complete and total darkness. the bloody generator eventually broke down. we had to spend hours in the dark with with a flashlight(i had an effin blue penlight, LOL) and the pt's bathroom light(no idea why that one was the only one working) and in the heat and humidity because the airconditioner was of course dead. one elevator broke down and then 2 code reds happened(fire) at the outpatient area.
when it finally calmed down for just a bit, they paged for the owner of the description of my truck with its license plate numbers. i was in the middle of admitting a pt in the dark on the laptop with my penlight under my chin because i could not see the blasted keys. i swear, i could've swallowed that pen when i heard that!
the tree's trunk broke in half and landed on the hood and windshield of my truck. it looked worse than it really was. after washing it, there are cracks in the windshield and scratches and chips of the paint. there are no visible dents. nothing like a truck,eh?;)
you know what's weird? my truck's original name was Charlie(it's been Spike for a long time now though)---the guy that talked to me and was in charge is also called Charlie. LOL, it's like my truck found its voice, LOL! i actually cracked up when i saw my truck in its state. i mean, seriously, of all the trucks and of all the trees, it had to be bloody me, LOLOL. i'm really not auspicious at all. LOL
i found out later that my mom was all alone with Casey, our dog at home---everyone was working. the whole thing was terrifying really but i had a sense of control since i was preoccupied with keeping our pts safe. my poor mom had to endure the thunder and lighting and howling winds alone. the thunder sounded like huge big rigs speeding down a surface street, very unnerving. the winds were blowing down trees and structures, heck, there was even a hangar whose light planes got turned over. when i drove home, there were a lot of trees down. until now, there are thousands of people without electricity. we ended up getting pt's with heat exhaustion and dehydration the following days because to go without airconditioning in Texas is just detrimental to your health.
DFW easily became incapacitated just for this weather, imagine how bad it could be once we get hit with the kind of tornadoes that the midwest experiences! nothing like mother nature to humble you, eh?
