Subject: Task 12

The activity chosen to be described and classified in this exercise was taken from William Lettlewood’s Task-Based Learning of Grammar form the website of the Language Center Hong Kong Batist University at http://cd.ed.gov.hk/eng/references/all_levels/task_based.pdf. It is based on the different ways of making suggestions and expressing reasons.

The situation of the activity is that students have decided to have a meal to celebrate somebody’s birthday and now have to agree on the arrangements. The activity should follow the steps bellow:

-the class is divided in groups of 3 to 5 students
-each student choose draft one of the cards bellow
-each student is given a few minutes to think about the choice he/she drafted
-each students should defend the choice in his/her card, trying to convince the others that it is the best choice for the celebration
-one of the students present to the class the decision and the reasons on which it was based.

Student A:You want to have lunch in a restaurant.
Student B:You want to have dinner in a restaurant.
Student C:You want to have a lunch-time barbecue in one of the country parks
Student D:You want to have an evening barbecue on the roof of your blocks of flats
Student E:You are still undecided. You should listen to the others’ ideas, make comments and then help the group decide

According to the types of communicative activities presented by Littlewood (1981: 32-33), this activity could be classified as a “sharing and processing information activity”. Each student has a different group of information that he/she is supposed to share with their partners. In the end of the activity , they have to come to a conclusion and a single answer. The interesting point is that the students are responsible for the whole activity. It is not enough that they state what is written in their cards. They have to construct arguments to defend their point of view. Although some of the structures are somewhat pre-defined, there is enough room for unpredictable use of the language.
